Friends of Blue Heron Park helps support this 250+ acre nature center and wildlife preserve located in Annadale Staten Island.
In the 1970's, a group of citizens, now known as Friends of Blue Heron Park, lobbied for the creation of a protected natural area on Staten Island's south shore. In 1984, as a result of their work and dedication, 155 acres were designated by the city as parkland. In 1998, Blue Heron Nature Center opened its doors to the public. As of 2005, Blue Heron Park has grown to over 250 acres.
HOW TO GET THERE:
By S.I. Rapid Transit: Exit at Annadale Station. Walk uphill on Annadale Road to Poillon Avenue. Follow Poillon a half mile to the park entrance.
By Bus: Take S78 or S59 to Poillon Avenue. Walk north 0.5 mi. to entrance.
By Car: Take the West Shore Expressway or the Korean War Vetrans Memorial (Richmond) Parkway and exit at Arden Avenue. Drive Arden Avenue south to Hylan Blvd., turn right and travel 0.6 mile to Poillon Avenue. Turn right, go half mile to park entrance. Or using Hylan Blvd., Poillon Avenue is 1.1 miles past Richmond Avenue when traveling toward Tottenville.
FBHP organizes, sponsors and administers environment-related programs at Blue Heron Park, supports the Blue Heron Nature Center. constructs boardwalks for trails and maintains gardens and bird feeding station.
