The group is dedicated to preserving the park's original design intent and strengthening the relationship between the park and the community at large. It is also dedicated to preserving the historic character of the surrounding neighborhood, and fostering pride and awareness of such. Entrusted with the park's care, the group shares a commitment to protect the great open space known as Tyler Park for today and for future generations.
In 1893, Mrs. Samuel Tyler sold a large piece of pasture land around the park to a local attorney, William Bent. She exempted from the sale a 2.74 acre parcel of land and donated it to the City of Lowell for a public park. Bent commissioned landscape architect Charles Eliot to design the park and the subdivision around it. Shortly after he took the job, Eliot joined the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted.
Eliot died in 1897 and John Charles Olmsted continued to supervise work on the park. The firm was one of the country's foremost landscape architects and was responsible for Central Park, Golden Gate Park, the Emerald Necklace and over 300 other parks in Massachusetts.
Tyler Park was designed to take advantage of the natural features of the site. It included "a glade in the midst of a 'little wood,' a big boulder, a little hollow, paths which will serve as short cuts...and as rambles," (Eliot, 14 April 1893). The park today looks much as it did at its completion and remains a place for residents to enjoy quiet moments from a hectic schedule, the lead gem in the crown known as the Highlands.
