Fulford Place

Description

Fulford Place is the start of the 20th century mansion home of Senator George Taylor Fulford, a Canadian businessman and politician. The home is now a historic house museum reflecting Edwardian period decorations, and is operated by the Ontario Heritage Trust. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1992.HistoryThe Fulfords had a mansion built for them in Brockville, Ontario on the shore of the St. Lawrence River where several other beautiful estates were located, many of which were owned by other successful businesspeople. In 1898, Fulford commissioned their estate to be built on the King’s Highway, on the eastern edge of Brockville. Architect Albert W. Fuller from Albany, New York, designed Fulford Place and it was elaborately decorated in the Beaux-Arts style. It was finished in 1901, and had 35 rooms making up 20 000 square feet. Since Fulford was an important figure in both the political world and the business scene, entertaining was one of Fulford Place’s primary functions. The house thus contains a grand hall, a dining room to seat over fifty guests, a spacious verandah, and a rococo-style drawing room for the ladies and a Moorish smoking room adjacent to a billiard room for the gentlemen.Notably, the grounds at Fulford Place were designed by the Olmsted Brothers, and the recently restored formal Italianate garden is a rare and important example of a privately owned Olmsted-designed garden.

"This site is temporarily closed for normal hours for the winter season. However, public tours can still be arranged. For tour information, please contact the museum at 613-498-3003."

Another stop in Brockville had us visiting Fulford Place. A beautiful mansion built for George Fulford, the Canadian business man behind Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People. If you've never heard of that, don't worry, we hadn't either but it is a very interesting piece of history if you happen to be passing through Brockville. Very beautiful architecture, intricate designs in every room. The restoration of this building is still not fully completed but what they've done so far is simply gorgeous. Definitely worth the low price of admission.
It's a grand place. Stunning inside and out. Our tour guide was super nice and friendly and very informative. It is a great place if you love history and architecture.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We did the tour this weekend. The tour was a bit delayed a large group ahead of us but it was worth the wait. The place is beautiful and the tour guide was great. He didn’t rush us through even though we were only 2 and was a very good story teller. He painted a good picture of what it would have been like to live in that house. We loved it.
The house amazing with full of history and wealth of that time! Thanks to Maya- ou tour guide we were able to go back and picture the life style of Fulford's family!Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNo
We visited this mansion on June 24. There is a parking space at the house. The only way to visit the house is with a guided tour. Every full hour, except at 00:00. The tour takes about 50 minutes. Please note that there may be a wedding. The guide told about the house, but it's the little stories about the lives of the residents that are interesting.

A wonderful opportunity to step back in Time - it's a lovely Mansion to Admire from outside but I would highly recommend taking the tour. Our tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and it was very interesting learning the details about this family which was a Cornerstone of the Brockville community.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

We loved the experience. The young lady who walked us through the home was absolutely a delight and she was very knowledgeable on the history of the place. The garden was a little disappointing but overall an absolute must do for any history buffs. Or even for people who are curious and want a peek into a millionaires home.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
