Really enjoyed the stay. Had Spot 1. Don't take that spot unless you love hearing kids play all day from early morning to dusk at the playground immediately across the road. Decent bathroom and shower facilities. A bit buggy but overall clean and within an easy walk regardless of where your spot is. Electric at sites 30 Amp but water has shared hookups so bring your longest water hoses. No black-tank hookup but a Dump Station on site on the way out another reason not to take Site 1. ; Reasonable rates $30 per night. Come fully equipped because the Camp Store has none of the usual camping items such as small propane bottles, batteries, camp stove gas, charcoal, or even ice or firewood. Staff is friendly. Canoe, kayaking, and paddle boat rental available. Very nice little lake no swimming and a little river that is beautiful for paddling. We enjoyed our visit and will very likely be back. Playground: One of two areas for kids to play. Restrooms: Some bugs but clean and serviceable overall. Dog-friendliness: Lots of puppies around. Picnic area: Lots of picnic tables available. Well shaded. Water nearby.
I didn't explore the trails or anything, but I enjoyed the kayaking experience here. I spent 2 hours traversing the waterway. There were definitely some underwater obstacles that caused a couple of my group members to get stuck. It'd be nice if they did a little maintenance. I certainly understand preserving the natural habitat, but there should be removal of the large fallen branches/trunks. Overall, it was a good time.
This entire area is awesome. Great place for the dogs and horses. Lots of areas to picnic. Restrooms are clean. Definitely worth the drive to spend the day. Pro Tip: If you do the Indian Head Trail, put on bug spray. You will thank me.
My boyfriend and I stayed here for three nights in a tent. Had an amazing experience. Bathrooms were clean, hiking trails were excellent, they offered mini golf and boat rentals which was awesome. Campsite was quiet and relaxing, and gated which added a level of security that was nice. We are from New York and would come back just for this camp site. Had an unforgettable time!
Super simple local spot to get outdoors and connect a bit with nature! Canoeing, pedal-boating, fishing, and there's even a little mini-golf course although the latter is not exactly an epic course, but it's worth mentioning - these are a few examples of what there is to find here. There's also a little welcome and info center / gift shop where you purchase things like canoe rentals, etc. or learn about the local wildlife and habitats. It's family-friendly and the people working there are patient and kind. We felt welcomed and appreciated which is more than one can say about a lot of places these days!
We had a great time camping there even though it rained. We didn’t get to rent a canoe like I hoped because of the weather but it was still cool. The playground by the campsites was great and so was the other one for daily use. You could probably bring your own putter and ball to play putt putt for free. The only downside was that the campsites were really close to each other, but that’s expected for the area.
Let me preface by saying that we have enjoyed all the campgrounds we have visited on our excursions over the summer. It takes a lot for me to decide to write a poor review, but I felt compelled to do so today. I remember staying at Northwest River park as a child and was excited to share a trip with my daughter - make new memories. Unfortunately, our experience was very different than I remember / had hoped it would be. We arrived late and were told that it was not a problem, just check in at the office in the morning. Early the next morning, we received a loud knock on the door of our RV. It scared me awake as I am unaccustomed to people knocking on the door. I went out to find a ranger reminding me to check in. Ok, understandable, it was late morning. When we got straight and headed out of the RV, we were ‘greeted’ by two very large and aggressive dogs in the campsite next to us. They were pulling on their leads hard enough to be standing only on their back paws. The leads were attached to a not-so-secure looking clothesline which also had several pieces of clothes on it. We spoke to the office about the dogs and they told us there was nothing that could be done but to let them know if there were more incidents. Later, the one dog would break free from his collar and shoot straight to our toy poodle. From that point on, we took our dog to a nearby park to walk, every morning and every night - most unfortunate for us and our dog. Our second day in the park, we were awakened to several police officers and rangers 5 feet from the front of our RV. An officer approached me and told me that the car in front of our spot had been stolen and asked if I had seen anything the night before. I had gone out around 1 to retrieve something from my car but didn’t notice anything off. The people camping next to us who were also one of only 3 campers in our loop were being questioned and another person came up and stated that he had seen one of them in the car that was presumably stolen. The incident left me feeling uneasy in our RV and we did not venture out after dark. Fortunately, a couple of days later, the campers and their dogs left. The RV pulled out but there was a tent pitched on the site that stayed a day longer. The day that the police were there, I took a walk across from our site and saw a pile of odd items in the fire pit. There was a license plate cover, some clothes, a razor blade and other things that were very out of place. no one had camped at any of these sites the entire time we were there. Thinking it could helpful for the rangers and police and realizing the potential danger for dogs and kids i. the campground I went up to the office and let them know. The girl working the front thanked me but rolled her eyes abs appeared annoyed. Okie then, did my due diligence:. The stuff remained in the fire pit for the next 3 days. We were fortunate to get good campers next to us after they left but we both realized the previous campers had abandoned two cats. I actually knew the name of one as I heard the campers call it on one occasion. Our new neighbors let the office know but the cats remained there till we left. It was sad. The stay was buggy and we have bites all over our feet and legs despite using spray, we have tons of mosquito bites and anything but relaxing. I spoke to a couple of the rangers there and they said they had been struggling to keep vagrants out and even told me some other unpleasant stories of recent campers / incidents within the park. I was sad to not feel safe enough to have a fire at night or to walk out of the RV after dark. There were no other campers for the majority of the time so there was no light - perhaps with more campers we would have felt safer. Getting knocks at the RV door kept us on edge as well 6 in total over 13 nights. In short, our stay did not provide new happy memories. Instead, my daughter and I left saying we would take Northwest River off our list of campgrounds to visit again in the future. So bummed.
Lovely horse trails and equestrian camping. There are lots of bridges to cross, bring at least one experienced horse to lead. Great day.
Beautiful campground. New Air conditioned facilities with private showers. Spacious private sites. Nice trails within the park. Kayaking and fishing in lake, a trail down to the river. Was there in the middle of July and the place was basically empty. Could be bc there's no swimming anywhere in the park, the heat, or the bugs. About an hour from OBX and 45 min to VA Beach. We enjoyed our stay and would return.
A beautiful place to take kayaks or rent them and the kayak/canoe launch was great. It was nice and peaceful! Under 18 years old must have an adult ride with them.
