Affordable, nutritious, delicious produce delivered to your neighbourhood or home
Why is the Good Food Box such a great deal? Food is a for profit business. Fresh produce has significant mark ups at grocery stores – anywhere from 40% – 70% higher than what was paid to the farmer. We prefer to pay the farmers fairly and directly for produce. Because we buy in such large quantities we pay wholesale prices that would not be available to individuals or small group purchasers. Our packing, marketing, and distribution is funded largely by volunteer labour and in-kind donations - we pass these savings on to you. Working together we create an alternative distribution system for high quality produce.
Also, when you buy a good food box you get better nutrition than shipped-in produce at chain grocery stores. Local and/or sustainably produced food has significantly higher nutritional integrity. For example, you would have to eat approximately 6 – 11 servings of conventionally grown leafy greens like spinach or kale grown in distant locales like Mexico or China to match the nutritional value in one serving of the same greens sustainably grown locally or regionally. The high pesticide and fertilizer usage, picking before ripeness, and long travel times of conventional produce dramatically deplete nutritional content. For young children –especially picky eaters- getting the most nutrition into each bite makes a very big difference for long-term health and immunity.
Creating food systems that value social, ecological, and economic justice!
