Description

Governor Livingston High School offers a complete educational program aimed at fostering the growth of all our students. Serving the communities of Berkeley Heights and Mountainside, Governor Livingston High School has a long tradition of excellence that is bolstered by a supportive community, motivated and hard-working students, and a talented teaching staff. In the words of one current student, "Governor Livingston is the kind of high school that is small enough for everyone to know your name but big enough to find your own niche. It is a school students are proud to attend because the teachers and administrators inspire respect and the student body inspires a sense of community. Despite differences in age, gender, background or friends, classes at GL have a way of bringing students together, allowing us all to share in one high school experience."

Governor Livingston students have an impressive record of academic achievement in the classroom. The class of 2010 once again earned SAT scores that far surpassed state and national averages. Governor Livingston scholars included four National Merit winners, four National Merit semi-finalists, nineteen National Merit Commended Students, and twenty-one Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholars. In addition, a total of fifty-six seniors received the President’s Education Award for outstanding academic excellence. Furthermore, the Advanced Placement Program met with similar success that combined high levels of student enrollment with strong scores. Eighty-four percent of all students scored at least a three or better and twenty-six percent earned the top score on the national exams. As a result of these academic accomplishments, Governor Livingston continues to be a top ranked high school in the publications by Newsweek and US News and World Report.

As a result of the academic success, more than ninety-six percent of Governor Livingston High School graduates in the class of 2010 are pursuing post-secondary education. Recent Governor Livingston graduates attend prestigious institutions of higher learning which include: Bucknell University, Rutgers University, Cornell University, Duke University, Columbia University, Penn State University, Princeton University, American University, Syracuse University, Tufts University, New York University, NJIT, and the University of Pennsylvania.

In conjunction with their high academic performance, Governor Livingston students actively pursue meaningful extracurricular and co-curricular activities and have excelled in athletics and in the arts. Supported by an active faculty and committed students as well as various parent booster organizations, these programs help develop well-rounded students who actively seek opportunities to serve the local community and beyond. Through honor societies and service clubs, Governor Livingston students have continued to make an impact upon their school and surrounding communities through their philanthropic efforts. The Student Council, Student Auxiliary, and numerous other organizations have gone above and beyond in their service for others. Perhaps most impressive, is the work done by the Interact Club highlighted by their initiative to support the international Pennies for Peace program. The goal of this project is to raise awareness about the importance of education in impoverished countries and to raise money to build schools for children in Afghanistan and Pakistan. These efforts to educate our entire community have been aided through the generous support of our Berkeley Heights Education Foundation in just one of many examples of how our community organizations support the educational goals of our high school students and other worthwhile activities.

Beyond the service activities, Governor Livingston boasts an excellent school newspaper, numerous academic and leadership teams, and an award-winning competitive marching band. These are but a small sampling of the rewarding opportunities available to all of our students. Athletically, Governor Livingston High School has a long tradition of developing the ideals of sportsmanship and teamwork on the playing fields. The athletic program offers a total of 30 varsity sports for men and women with numerous teams competing on the junior varsity and freshmen levels as well. Beyond the more traditional sports offerings, the school sponsors lacrosse, ice hockey and fencing. Highlights from our past season include State Sectional Championships in girls’ tennis, bowling, and softball as well as an appearance in the state finals in both baseball and fencing. The high levels of student participation in all of our extra-curricular activities reinforce the lessons of dedication and commitment that are important for success in our students’ future endeavors.

Overall, Governor Livingston High School is an outstanding high school that continues to provide all of our students with opportunities to succeed in an ever-changing world. As summarized by another student, “Governor Livingston High School is a medium sized school that captures the greatest traits of its smaller and larger counterparts. With a wide array of both academic and extracurricular activities there is a way for every student to further venture into their own particular area of interest from arts, athletics, science, law, to countless other areas of opportunity. Yet, it also captures the spirit of small tightly knit high school communities with fantastic faculty involvement and large student participation in school activities. In a sense, Governor Livingston High School offers the opportunity to have an outstanding high school career and fully prepare a student for what lies ahead."
