General Information
Grayslake Feed Sales was founded by Leo DeMeyer in 1940 at the corner of Rt.120 and Slusser St. in Grayslake, IL. At that time there were over 1200 dairy farms plus over 400 other small farms raising beef, hogs and poultry. The business supplied custom mixed feeds and supplements as well as other equipment necessary for raising farm animals. Leo also sold seed, fertilizers and chemicals necessary ...for raising the crops. In the fall Grayslake Feed Sales purchased the harvested crops and trucked them to markets in Chicago, Milwaukee and Galesburg.
The business grew quickly and soon needed room for expansion and access to the railroad. In 1950 the business was moved to Center St. in Grayslake. The new facility provided the room and a railroad siding to bring new product in and ship the harvested grain out. The original location on Slussser St. was then used as a warehouse and truck garage.
In 1971 Leo's son Richard, after 3 years training in welding and diesel truck repair, was responsible for the maintenance and repair of the company's small fleet of trucks and equipment. Within 2 years Rich started to take in equipment from the local farmers and neighbors for repair. This included tractors, wagons, lawnmowers and air cooled engines. Grayslake Feed Sales became dealers for Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, Kohler and Wisconsin engines. After training in factory service schools, Rich was certified and authorized to do warranty repair on these engines. In the mid 70's Ariens, Lawnboy, Pioneer, Homelite, Toro, Echo and Husqvarna Power Equipment were included. By 1983, product lines included Bob-Cat Comercial Mowers and Honda Power Equipment. Since then, Scag Commercial Mowers, Kawasaki Power equipment and several lines of arborist equipment and supplies were added to the mix.
