Description

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, is a not-for-profit founded in 1980 headquartered in Duquesne, PA. With a focus on serving the region’s most vulnerable populations with the healthiest foods possible, the Food Bank is committed to providing higher access to fresh fruits and vegetables. This goal is accomplished by partnering with local grocers, distribution companies, farmers, community organizations and individuals to acquire and distribute these foods to the community through a network of nearly 400 member agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, after-school programs and senior housing sites. Together, the Food Bank network distributed 31 million meals last year to the community and is dedicated to meeting the need for food assistance in our region.

Through food solicitation, fund raising, special events, and community partnerships, the Food Bank gathers food at our 94,000 square foot warehouse in Duquesne, PA. Through outlets such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, after school programs, senior high rises, MH-MR drop-in centers, neighborhood food assistance agencies, emergency or disaster-related feeding sites, regional food banks, Meals on Wheels, community centers, and special programs, the Food Bank currently distributes around 27 million pounds of food per year. Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is a member of Feeding America.

Daily operations at our award-winning LEED certified "Green" warehouse include inspecting and re-packaging food, preparing orders for agencies, receiving, deliveries, pick-ups, maintaining a fleet of trucks and other vehicles, accounting and tracking, Food Stamp outreach, visiting and monitoring agencies, special events planning, development activities, nutrition education, a test kitchen, volunteer projects, publications, and tours.

The Food Bank enjoys rich collaborative relationships with corporations and foundations, government, donors, volunteers, agencies and people we serve. Because of this strong community support, the Food Bank is there to help when we're needed. Even after two decades, we still strive to respond to our community's needs by improving and expanding services, developing new programs, advocating for changes in public policy, maintaining best practices, and alleviating hunger wherever and however we can.

A great resource for the Greater Pittsburgh Region. Volunteering at the Engagement Center and Walk-up Community Food Distribution Sites is a great way to help the community. Go to their website and volunteer with friends, family, co-workers. You will meet people who care for our communities and all who benefit.

These people really go out of the way to help people in need. You can also volunteer your time. Wonderful people making a difference in the world
I was in need for food badly and they treated me so well and Mike was super friendly when helping me get the food I needed.
I wanted to volunteer on my birthday, so I emailed the volunteer coordinator to help me find a volunteer opportunity on that day. They were very kind to let me come in the morning to help pack food boxes for seniors. The process was easy to follow and very efficient. I was in charged of putting canned beef into the boxese from 9am to 12noon. It was tiring, boxes kept on coming to me!! But I feel good that seniors in the community will have a box of food and won't starve. I hope to come back here and volunteer again in the future!

Offers free food to all Mostly gives you a few days worth of canned goods, milk, bread, and meat. Can come twice per month.
