Green Gate Farm is a family owned draft horse powered farm near Shepherdstown, West Virginia managed and operated by Lars Prillaman and Leslie Randall.
At Green Gate Farm, our first goal was to raise as much of our own food as possible, both produce and animals, in keeping with organic and humane practices. We do not put chemical fertilizers in our garden plots or hormones and unnecessary antibiotics in our animal feed or livestock. We provide our animals room to grow and thrive. We keep our carbon footprint small and we seek the highest quality in all we produce. As we move into our first year of production, these values remain central to all we do.
In keeping with the spirit of sustainability, we have a goal that within the next two to three years, a large portion or even perhaps all of our heavy field work will be done with working animals such as mules or draft horses. From plowing and cultivating to cutting hay before bailing, we have a dream of minimizing the unsustainable use of petroleum fuels while maximizing our yields naturally and sustainably.
We're pleased to bring Leslie Randall into the mix. Starting this year Leslie will manage the vegetable and fruit growing end of things. We at Green Gate Farm are excited to bring her skills and passion to the fields and we look forward to learning from her great amount of experience.
