Such a charming place to visit! Kate was a fantastic host during our tour of this fascinating process. I was surprised that my son 6 years old was intrigued by the process as well. I was able to leave with enough lovely yarn for a few projects, as well as a whole new appreciation for the work and heart that goes into the processing of the fibre. I will keep this in mind with each stitch I make with this yarn.
The tour was amazing! Our guide I believe her name was Kate? was welcoming and informative. Very enjoyable even for someone like me, who does not knit/crochet.
Green Mountain Spinnery was a lot smaller than I had imagined but it was absolutely perfect. Walking through the door into the very small shop, the smell was of sheep. It made me smile. The woman behind the counter was knitting a beautiful sweater. She was so kind and showed us the back room machines and explained the process of making yarn. I was a little disappointed to find out that Vermont sheep wool is not used to make the yarn. But they do make the yarn there. It was incredibly interesting to see the process, hear what goes in to making the products, and then to be able to touch the yarns. She was very encouraging about the necessity of touching the fibers. I love their yarns. I bought three skeins to use for mittens. I still have my sights set on the beautiful gray Yarn Over yarn for a new Aran sweater for myself
What makes this small yarn shop the best is that it is attached to a spinning mill where they produce all their own excellent, high-quality yarn. Taking in the fleece at one end, and spinning yarn at the other. Seeing the process is amazing - but maybe that is just the geek in me!
This shop is AMAZING! Not only do you have a wide variety of beautiful yarns but you can also see the actual machines that take fresh wool & turn it in to the most beautiful skeins of yarn in weights from fingerling to chunky. The staff are very knowledgeable & are able to show you samples that have been made out of each type of yarn displayed in the shop. They also have the patterns for each sample displayed.
Very helpful lady there who explained the process and sustainable business practices of Green Mountain Spinnery. The yarn is lovely and I purchased one of their patterns to start my next project. It is worth a visit and I would suggest purchasing some of their organic yarn.
BEST Customer Service EVER! I am working on a project with Green Mountain Spinnery Yarn, and realized I needed one more skein of Simply Fine Variegated. The only dye lot available was very different from my other two skeins, and I was plotting how to use it for facings and how to blend it. I sent an email to try to resolve this, and Kate offered to swap out old skeins for new didn't want to do that, liked the older, warmer color skeins. A week later, I heard from Kate again- she had found a limited amount of the exact dye lot I had asked about in the wrong location in the warehouse, and was checking to see if I wanted it. Just received the perfect matching skein! I so appreciate the personal attention and energy it took to find my email and make the offer! Thank you, Kate!
I have not been to Green Mountain Spinnery yet, BUT I love their site, love reading the book I have the first one and love looking at the beautiful yarn on the pages of the book along with the projects made with these yarns. The patterns are so nice. I browsed the site again today, yarns and all. I purchased my first yarn from Green Mountain Spinnery and eagerly await it's arrival!! If I ever get to VT, I will visit for sure! I may go there just to visit the spinnery. I can't fully answer the scoring above but the appeal is great and the online service was great. I'm sure the quality is wonderful.
I had been searching for over a year to find someone who could spin my finer micron Montadale without needing a “slick” blend fiber. Green Mountain delivered and a very short 3 months turn around. They even volunteered to pick up the fiber at SAFF which meant I only had to pay shipping one way. I am thrilled with my yarn and roving as well as the courtesy of the staff at Green Mountain Spinnery.
I love that this is a worker owned cooperative! The ladies were all wonderful to this 1st time visitor/crocheter..., especially Lauren who gave us an impromptu tour! This yarn is exceptional!
