Green-Wood Cemetery

Description

Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838 as a rural cemetery in Kings County, New York. Like other early rural cemeteries, Green-Wood was founded in a time of rapid urbanization when churchyards in New York City were becoming overcrowded.Located in Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn, the cemetery lies several blocks southwest of Prospect Park, between Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Borough Park, Kensington, and Sunset Park. Paul Goldberger in The New York Times, wrote that it was said "it is the ambition of the New Yorker to live upon the Fifth Avenue, to take his airings in the Park, and to sleep with his fathers in Green-Wood".The gates of the cemetery were designated a New York City landmark in 1966, and the Weir Greenhouse, used as a visitor's center, in 1982. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and was granted National Historic Landmark status in 2006 by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Fort Hamilton Parkway Gate and the cemetery's chapel were designated as landmarks by New York City in 2016.

It's a place I like to see less reviews understand people because the cemetery doesn't exactly treat it as a real attraction. I went a few times a week and didn't find many people. Saw the trees, plants, statues and various birds inside. I feel like I can accept it as a place of interest. There are also interesting places of interest that have stories to tell. It is not even inferior to the adjacent Prospect Park, after all, this cemetery is also large. There are just no big lakes and a few medium-sized river pools. You can also experience climbing in it, with many winding paths. You can also go to the high slope like a hill, you can see the whole Manhattan, in the high place can see the Brooklyn city look.
genuinely the most beautiful cemetery I have been to so far, which is generally not a lot considering this is only the second one but this place is amazing it's peaceful, it's beautiful, the artistry shown with the mausoleums and tombstones is also incredible to look at if I lived around here I'd go here everyday
Hands down, my favorite place in the city. It’s absolutely gorgeous in all seasons; great place to explore, and learn history, and see nature all without leaving Brooklyn. They have a great selection of amazing tours for those who’d like a deeper dive into history. But even without it’s a perfect place for a stroll and to get away from the hustle.
Interesting place to have a walk. There is an office where you can get a map with different types of walk around the cemetery, so you can choose yourself what you are interested in- natural walk, art&architecture walk and history walk. For each stop you can find a small explanation on the map. We came around 9.30 am on Sunday, office was closed, but we found maps outside. Restrooms clean and tidy, were open. I found a lot of trees there, such as Japanese cherry and magnolia. I believe this place would be beautiful in spring. Walking at this place feels more like museum, not cemetery. Would visit again.
History, Sculpture Garden, Peaceful Retreat and an excellent placehillyfor an aerobic hike.
I know when thinking of activities, visiting a cemetery is usually not first on the list, but this is definitely a place you should visit. I first came here 2 years ago during the beginning of autumn. I returned again today. It is really really spectacular. There's many trails, a pond , tons of history, they even have tours . It is extremely peaceful, today I even saw groups of families taking pictures, hiking , enjoying the architecture sitting on the bench, praying and just walking about. Again it's a cemetery so be respectful but if you want to take in all of the gorgeous Fall Foliage and you don't want to go to the usual parks with the massive crowds this is definitely a great place to get some fantastic autumn photos.
This place gave me a peace , which I been waiting for a long . I spend whole day there . Cried for my grandma with whom I couldn’t say goodbye. I couldn’t managed to fly overseas so all my heavy pain and grief was gone from my heart. This place is magic and unique.
Went for a walk in the entire cemetery on a winter morning. I wanted a place to clear my thoughts and breath fresh air. There is a lot of history, architect and many walking lanes that you can follow and get yourself immersed.
Green-Wood is The most beautiful park in New York. It’s Full of history and fascinating architecture. Green-Wood is a web of roads and paved paths mostly accessible by car. However the best experience is to walk. Just park your car for free at the gate and get lost in the paradise. Visiting Green-Wood is by far better experience then strolling neighboring prospect park or even overrated Central Park. Grab your map at the entrance and go searching Green-Wood’s famous permanent residents, or simply walk around without any agenda. Soak in the well manicured green vistas papered with century old headstones, obelisks, statues, monuments, and stunning mausoleums. Don’t miss out the most beautiful site in Green-Wood the mausoleum of C.K.Garrison - arguably one the most beautiful resting places. It’s located in very heart of the cemetery which is a must to visit. Allow yourself 2-3 hours, wear comfortable shoes, and come often. Green-Wood doesn’t disappoint whether you visit for the first or the ten’s time. Enjoy!
Beautiful park that hosts a rich cemetery. This is one of my favorite places in the city. The small hills and winding paths make this place a great place for a walk away from the city. Taking advantage of the rate landscape, they also organize cultural events from small online tasks about history to live performances that can be pretentious. Everything is usually quirky in a fun way. Check out their website and newsletter for details. There are some good restaurants surrounding the cemetery for a meal after a stroll.
