The Connecticut Immunization Action Plan is a statewide program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) whose purpose is to raise immunization rates of pre-school children.
The Hamden, Milford, North Haven, Orange & West Haven Immunization Action Plan (IAP) area is one of twelve IAP areas in Connecticut. The IAP is a subunit of the State Department of Public Health’s Immunization Program.
State Immunization Program Units:
1. Connecticut Immunization and Registry Tracking System (CIRTS)
2. Immunization Action Plan (IAP)
3. Vaccines for Children (VFC)
4. Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit
5. Adult Immunizations
The West Haven Health Department houses these areas and receives the funding to maintain the IAP program in the surrounding areas.
Some of the core responsibilities of an IAP coordinator is to conduct outreach and tracking using the statewide immunization registry, CIRTS, educate the public about the importance of vaccination, and conduct assessments in pediatric practices to improve vaccine delivery.
The West Haven IAP shares the same mission as the Connecticut Department of Public Health Immunization Program:
To prevent disease, disability and death from vaccine-preventable diseases in infants, children, adolescents and adults through surveillance, case investigation and control, vaccination, monitoring of immunization levels, provision of vaccine, and professional and public education.
