Hamilton County consists of 519 square miles and has a population of 9,124. The county seat is Aurora. There are 6 villages in the County which consist of Marquette, Hordville, Hampton, Stockham, Giltner, and Phillps. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department employs 8 sworn deputies and 10 support staff.
The Hamilton County Law Enforcement Center houses both the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department and the Aurora Police Department as well as a satellite office for the Nebraska State Patrol. The Hamilton County Jail is also located within the Law Enforcement Center and ran by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. The jail is able to house 32 inmates.
Kirk W. Handrup is the current Sheriff of Hamilton County and took office in 1991. He is currently in his 6th term as Sheriff.
