Established in 1900, Hammond Fire and Rescue is located in Northern New York State, 22 miles south-west of Ogdensburg, NY and 43 miles north-east of Watertown, NY in the south-west corner of St. Lawrence County.
The northern town line is the international border of Ontario, Canada, defined by the St. Lawrence River. We are primarily a rural, farming, bedroom community with limited businesses.
Our first due area includes the Village of Hammond, and the Town of Hammond. It is a mostly residential population of 1,471 in 78.5 square miles.
We are 100% volunteer department consisting of 40 active volunteer firefighters, 4 EMT’s, 1 firefighter/EMT.
We operate out of one station located in the Village of Hammond. We are only advanced level EMS in a 25 mile radius and are located 100 miles form nearest Level 1 trauma center. Our nearest emergency department is located 20 miles away.
Over the last three years, we averaged 141 calls per year of which 58% were EMS responses. We provide called for mutual aid for all of our surrounding districts for structure fires, and other major incidents. For larger emergencies we are also involved in the county/state wide mutual aid plan.
