Hand's Park is an idyllic park located on the south shore of North Silver Lake. Featuring a railroad depot hall and softball field in a park like setting.
Hand's Park was started as a baseball field in 1919 by Ernest Hand Sr. The Brooklyn Dodgers played the local Fairmont Team on Oct. 8, 1924. School was let out and over 3000 people watched the hometown boys give the Dodgers a run for their money. Black traveling teams like the Harlem Globetrotters, KansasCity Monarchs, Brooklyn Cuban Dodgers and pitchers like Sachel Paige.
In 1992, Bruce and Shelly Hand Abitz purchased the land and went about restoring the once great field. With the help of 100's of community volunteers, the field was playable in 1994 and saw softball games played by 4-H groups. Alex Cross of Sherburn was the first to hit a home run at the restored, Silver Lake Field.
