Hard Times Cafe

Description

Hard Times Cafe is a collectively owned restaurant in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is known for its punk and hippie ideology, its gritty ambiance, and its large selection of vegan and vegetarian food. It is open 22 hours a day, closing only between the hours of 4 am and 6 am.HistoryHard Times was founded as a 24-hour cafe in 1992 by eight employees of The Urban Peasant, a failing restaurant at that location. Working with the vision of a place where all kinds of people could come together to drink coffee and eat vegetarian food, they transformed the restaurant into what is now Hard Times. The location is a staple of the West Bank neighborhood, and a popular gathering place for local artists, musicians, students, and political activists.Minneapolis Second Ward City Council Member Cam Gordon holds open office hours in the cafe on the first Tuesday morning of each month.Hard Times faced closing in January 2000, when several arrests were made as a result of a drug sting at the cafe. The owners closed its doors voluntarily in the aftermath, but faced problems with the city when attempting to reopen. The owners met all of the health and fire codes necessary to reopen, but refused to sign a contract obligating them to close at 2 am and hire a licensed security guard. A compromise was eventually made, with Hard Times closing its doors for two hours each night.

Super good food and so so may vegan/veg options. I got the Seitan Philly with vegan cheese. It was really good. Perfect portion and very reasonable prices. My friend got the falafel wrap which was also good. Lots of drink options, as well as a nice bakery case up front. Chill grunge vibe inside. Definitely a great place to come to chill out and eat some good vegan goodness.
The food was very good. Me and the people I went with liked how you write down your order. It’s definitely a unique place in that aspect but I think it makes things easier for the staff and customer… I got the big pancake, it was good it’s just I should’ve asked for my syrup with it— considering how big of a pancake it was. Vegan sausage was great and my coffee was rly rich and creamy
I went in pretty raw. Just having a hard time kinda day. They were really patient with me. Helped me order everything even. The food is the absolute best cure for a hard time. Vegan comfort food that hits just right every time. Vegetarian options: Great vegan food
I believe in cycles. There’s an old saying that’s says that hard times bring good times and after being here the name makes so much sense. I have no idea why they named it hard times maybe, the name comes from the feelings when leaving. Either way, the only hard time I had was choosing something off the menu. Paying, eating, or enjoying were not on the hard times list.
Classic diner food and vibes but vegetarian and vegan-ified. Got the vegan helter skelter with rye toast and tried the biscuits and gravy. I am obsessed with the gravy on the biscuits! Helter skelter was simple but had fresh veggies. This place is cash only so make sure you bring cash. You write your order on a slip and hand it to them to pay. Vegetarian options: Their entire menu is vegetarian. Dietary restrictions: All items are vegetarian and there are tons of vegan options too!
Good value. Good food. First time I felt like a normal person since becoming vegan. Love this place. Fun atmosphere. Full servings are around $10 but they are more than enough. Haven't been truly full in a while until I started eating here.Food: 5/5
I went a few months ago and it’s a good place to find vegetarian options. My sandwich tasted pretty good and it was pretty inventive but it slightly soured in the end which might not be bad to some people but slightly off putting to me. The chips were good and almost addicting though and the tea was alright but wasn’t sweet enough for my taste. The service here was okay, a bit impatient with us, but still pretty nice. Overall it’s a good joint for decent vegetarian food but I don’t think I would get the sandwich or tea again. However please note that for my friend, her food was great and she has no complaints so it really depends on you.
Food was great. Prices were great. Definitely had a coffee shop vibe to it, but nothing fancy.Food: 5/5
Driving from Olympia to Chicago, this was the only place that was a must-see on our journey. It was well worth it! The friendly folks working there, the cool art, the obvious deep connection to the local community through activism and atmosphere, and the friendly fellow customers made feel like I'd found a second Burial Grounds Coffee stashed away in Minneapolis. The food and coffer were fantastic, too!
This place is a must for everyone, vegan or not. Hail Seitan! Breakfast served all day was a pleasant surprise. Food was very good, music was fun, and people were cool. There’s even a little box with free clothes! Beware: cash only, but there’s an ATM
