Calvin K. Hastie, Sr. was born in Sumter, South Carolina. He is the son of Ezekiel and Lucille Burgess Hastie. Calvin graduated from Lincoln High School in 1968 where he served as Class President both his Junior and Senior years. While at Lincoln High School he sang on the choir, played football and participated on the track team.
In 1968, Calvin went to South Carolina State (SC State) University on a football scholarship. While at SC State University he lettered in track four consecutive years, joined the Reserve Officers Training Corp (ROTC) and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Calvin graduated from SC State University in 1972 and entered the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant.
Calvin served in the United States Army for twenty years. He retired in 1992 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While in the army he served at West Point, NATO Headquarters in Germany, Fort Stewart Georgia on the staff of Norman Schwartzscoff and at the Pentagon on the staff of Colin Powell.
The Sumter City Council has awarded Calvin its Favorite Son Award. The Army has awarded Calvin the Airborne and Ranger Badges, the Army Commendation Medal, three (3) Meritorious Service Medals, the Foreign Service Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit Medal. In 2010 Calvin was elected to serve on the Sumter City Council and in October to 2012 he was selected as South Carolina’s Public Defender of the Year.
Calvin joined New Bethel Baptist Church at the age of twelve and has served at the church as a Deacon, member of the Senior Usher Ministry, Church School Teacher, Brotherhood and Pastor Aid Ministry. He is now a Minister at New Bethel serving under the direction of Pastor Willie A. Wright, Jr.
Calvin is married to Mrs. Ann Lee of Spartanburg, SC, also a graduate of SC State University. They have two children, Cashena, who is a doctor Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia, SC, and Calvin Jr. (Kenny) an attorney practicing at the South Carolina Lawyers for Justice Association, Columbia, SC. Calvin and Ann have one grandson, Calvin K. Hastie, III.
After retiring from the Army in 1992, Calvin entered Law School in 1993. Upon graduating from Law School in 1996, Calvin worked for South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE&G) for ten (10) years as a Corporate Attorney in the area of Contract Law. Calvin is a member of the Sumter City Council, serving his second term, and is the owner of Hastie Law Firm in Sumter, SC.
His favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
