"Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and confirm for us the work of our hands. Yes, confirm the work of our hands." Psalm 90:17
My sewing legacy began back in the depression era (maybe sooner) when my dear grandmother was a talented seamstress. One of my prized possessions is my Grandma's solid wood (depression green) ironing board that was a gift from my grandfather on their first anniversary. He was killed on his way home from the war in the early 40's, leaving my Grandma a young widow with two small children. She used her sewing skills to help support them until she met and married the only Grandfather I ever knew. I spent a great deal of my childhood hanging out at my grandparent's house, where my Grandma taught me how to sew and crochet when I was nine years old.
I had four children of my own, and sewed most of my daughters' clothing until they would no longer allow me to because it wasn't "cool". As my children grew up, I pursued my passion for quilting. After a mid-life divorce, I had to put that aside and focus on surviving. As someone who had always been a stay-at-home Mom, there weren't a lot of prospects for the income I needed to support me and my youngest Son. But luckily God had a better plan than even I could have imagined! My Prince Charming came along and swept me off my feet :)
I've been working as a lunch lady the last twelve years, but have always had the dream of staying home again. The only way that can happen is if I find a way supplement to my income. I spent the last few years trying to build a photography business, but an injury to my shoulder this last year has put that on hold. So here I am facing a new year ahead of me with new hopes and dreams for my future. I decided to fall back on my roots and give the seamstress thing a try :)
My Grandma always has been, and always will be, my greatest hero. Her legacy lives on through four generations now, as my daughter has started her own sewing business to help support her family, and also had a crochet business which supported her as a single Mom. Her determination to use the creativity that God has blessed her with to support her family is rivaled by few. She is also my hero :) And now my granddaughter already has her very own sewing machine. One day when she's a little older, I will have her over for some sewing lessons. And some tea. We will sew and drink tea together as I remember fondly the days with my own grandmother. The circle of life keeps going 'round. It is my hope that one day my sweet granddaughter Gracie will remember her Grandma as fondly as I remember mine :)
I find it only fitting that, since my dearly departed Grandma is the reason we inherited the creative gene, that I devote my business to her. Therefore, it is also named after her. Hattie Rae was her childhood name, which she changed to Harriett when she grew up as she felt it was more fitting for a lady ;) I hope that as I pursue this next chapter of my life, that my Grandma is looking down from heaven with a smile on her face and pride in her heart at the wonderful legacy that she has left behind :)
And finally, I would like to thank the Lord for blessing our family with the gift of creativity. It has been a source of enjoyment, comfort, and sanity over many decades. It is by His grace that we are not only able to do something with the work of our hands that we enjoy so much, but can also use as a way to help our family financially. For without Him, we can do nothing.
