We are at a point in time where our zip code is a bigger predictor of life expectancy than our genetic code. The United States ranks near the bottom in life expectancy compared to developed countries. For decades, we’ve worked to improve quality, access and coverage to healthcare. This is reflected in how much we’re spending. The United States is only around 6% of the world’s population, but we account for nearly 50% of the entire world’s healthcare spending. Medical care is important, but evidence shows that it’s a small contributor to the life expectancy and overall health when compared to behavior, social economic status, and the environment in which we live.
The Healthier Montgomery Streets and Neighborhoods is an initiative of the Montgomery County Health Department and was made possible through a The Kresge Foundation's Emerging Leaders in Public Health grant. Streets and in neighborhoods is where we live. It’s where we work, worship, play and go to school. Healthier Montgomery strives to improve health by taking the best ideas and providing a roadmap that turns those ideas into actions at the street and neighborhood level. We’re in the “Place” improvement business. Improving “Place” improves the health and helps Clarksville and Montgomery County do its part to become a Healthier Tennessee.
