Healthy Birth Day: The birth of a friendship, the birth of a cause.
We are five Des Moines moms who met in 2003 after each lost a daughter to stillbirth or infant death. When we met, we had no idea that our baby girls – Emma, Grace Biondi, Jayden, Grace Elizabeth and Madeline – had given us a powerful gift – the gift of friendship.
Over the years we have been there for each other: sharing the unfathomable first days and weeks after saying goodbye to our daughters, surviving their birthdays without them, enduring successful and unsuccessful subsequent pregnancies, celebrating the births and birthdays of our other children, and reaching out to families who have recently lost a baby to stillbirth and infant death.
The birth of our friendship led to the birth of a cause.
We founded Healthy Birth Day – a nonprofit organization, run entirely by volunteer moms, dedicated to preventing stillbirths and infant deaths through education, advocacy and parent support. Some of the Healthy Birth Day’s accomplishments include:
- Getting Iowa’s Stillbirth Registry law enacted, which has brought more than $1.3 million into Iowa for stillbirth prevention research.
- Founding a parent-to-parent network to reach out to grieving families immediately following their loss of their babies.
- Launching a “Count the Kicks” public health campaign to help prevent stillbirths.
There is still much work to be done. We hope you will join our crusade to prevent stillbirths and infant deaths.
