Our experience at Durham Charter has been exceptional. The teachers are truly invested in my children’s education and their growth as learners. Adjustments are made as needed to meet the needs of the student. The leveled learning have enabled my children to gain confidence in their learning abilities. The curriculum is challenging where they push the child to their best abilities. The teachers constantly taking training and create plan of attacks to encourage scholars. They really makes me feel that we are part of a big family!
I want to say that this is a very GREAT SCHOOL, I switched my son from DPS to Durham Charter for many reasons academic, transportation and communication wise something that DPS didn't have at all. I don't regret at all switching my son from DPS to Durham Charter I LOVE IT ! I have seen a major change in my son him being eager to read and learn more something that I didn't get to see before but now I am seeing it. If a parent is in doubt you can always communicate with the teachers at all times and not only that if you was to call the school you will always get an answer with no doubt. I appreciate and Love everything Durham Charter do for the scholars and parents.
I am honored to say that this school is one of the best Charte school in Durham I have chosen for all 3 of my kids. The office staff is always there to help parents and always answer the phone never have an issue with that at all and also with the education of my kids I am greatly appreciate what the teachers are doing with them and encouraging them to be eager to learn more and more. I love everything that Durham Charter does for the parents and importantly for the kids.
The school it’s excellent, great teachers , the office staff excellent!!
Pickup for kids takes to long over 15 minutes. Students are not allowed to go to the restroom. If they ask to go, the teacher will tell them they have to write sentences or a quiet lunch. This is not appreciate behavior from a third grade teacher. And a teacher rolling her eyes at students is not appreciate behaved. Remember kids do what they see others do. Don't call a parents for a student rolling there eyes at you if that's all you do to them all day because you don't have patience to deal with 3rd graders.
When it comes to Healthy Start Academy there needs to be so, so many changes that needs to made, starting with the head. There are some good teachers there and staff and I did appreciate them and thank you for all your help but when you don't appreciate your staff there should be changes. Not only that but the school structure is not doing such a good job for the kids. Behavioral issues of the kids are not handled like they should be, it seems to be the wrong doers get punished much lesser. I asked the board to really take a serious look into things and there is talk spreading to not take your kids to Healthy Start Academy. Mrs. Hill stay beautiful always, Mr. Willis thank you, you where like a farther figure to my son. Ms. Johnson, Ms. Stancil, Ms. Bailey please keep up the good work. To the good teachers that stuck around and cared you know who you are Thank you.
Staff is more so there for a check than your child education. I have a child that attends Healthy Start Academy but this will be his last year attending. Son is receiving speech and OT services and is still far behind. HSA is easily to hold him back grade level than to try to come up up with alternatives to keep him from falling to far behind. School bus drivers are more concerned about your child remaining in the doorway of there home waiting for them to pull up at the bus stop. To keep from remaining standing in cold weather for them to arrive at bus stop on time. 002 bus driver Miss Brittany is always late and talks on cell phone while driving the bus. Talkes badly about parents around scholars and scholars repeat the gossip to parents. My son is battling BULLYING at the school and NOTHING seems to get done until he retaliates against other scholars. Child is being suspended for 5 days off school bus because the driver Miss Brittany has a problem with me the mother of the scholar so has found a way to nic-pic with the scholar. I have gone above her head to try to address this issus with her supervisor. Whom did not return any of my phone calls about this issue. They secretly arranged a meeting about suspending my son of the school bus for 5 days without including the parent. Now how unprofessional is that? All parties attend the meeting except I the parent. Mr. Johnson and numerous of other staff have been aware of my son being bullied but like i had stated earlier. Everything seems to fall back on my son retaliating against other scholars. Every other day constantly receiving phone calls about some my son has done. All calls are always negative. Nothing positive ever gets reported often. My son has been put on ADHD medicine trying to help the this issue which HSA says is a behavior problem. He has been taking it for over a year now. But now that the bullying is getting worse....My sons behavior is overriding his dosage. No! Problems with his behavior before while taking his ADHD meds. Until the bullying continued to proceed worsen. Which makes me question? Are you really there for the safety, farness, and well being of my child?. Do you really care about his education or are you just there for a paycheck? Us as parents need to be concerned about what custody our child is in for school. Everything that appears to be good is not always good. Step back and evaluate the decision more than just settling. Dont accept just anything because just because one school seems not to care doesnt mean all. Wish I had known back then about HSA that i know now. Which makes me step back and see how strong my son is. Now knowing why my 9year old is now saying he wants to leave HSA. I would too. When all i see is the STAFF, BUS DRIVERS and SCHOLARS are ganging up on me. Me as a parent I feel like I have failed as a parent by forcing my son to continue going through this problem during this school year. Should have removed him when it was first brought to my attention. My advice from parent to parent is to seek other education opportunities. Make HSA your last option. THANKS! For taking the time to read. Know it was a long story but, needed it to be heard to save someone elses child form the pain
Attendance is a joke. School claims they operate differently from public schools. School policy handbook clearly states they operate on NC public school guidelines. CPS and police should have been notified on multiple occasions regarding alarming events and they did nothing. They involve themselves in family matters where they have no right to do so. Falsified documents is OK by their standards to give them if you want to keep another parent away. Principal does not have the respect or decency to email/call you back regarding any concerns you may have. He instead sends others to speak for him. After sitting down one on one with Mr. Quigley and Mrs. Hill, Mr. Quigley verbally promised to hold mother accountable regarding truancy. The oldest child has been attending HSA since 2016/2017 school year. He was even held back because of his truancy. Our meeting took place during the 2017/2018 school year. NOTHING WAS DONE OR HAS BEEN DONE EXCEPT TO EXCUSE ALL ABSENCES WITHOUT DOCUMENTATION. They are a disgrace to all charter schools. Their lack of care and respect for the safety of students is nowhere to be found. When we went to the school to check on the child, it was below 50 degree wheather and he had no jacket, feet hanging out of his shoes, and a short sleeve shirt. We bought the child a proper school shirt and asked why they did not notify anyone. They had zero explanations. Front office staff mentioned they had been having a lot of problems with mother. Father is only allowed to check on his child's welfare through liveschool and emails. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO THIS SCHOOL. When Liz Morrey head of board was contacted regarding these matters, she became verbally aggressive. This school should be shut down for the safety of all students.
if you know a child or a friend with a child that goes to Healthy Start Academy please take the time to read this...I am a new kindergarten parent and I chose HSA for my son's place of education because I was given good feedback on how good of a school they was, but my experience has been nothing but a nightmare. My son was in Ms. Bellamys' class whom came highly recommended in which she is a great teacher but after having issues with her telling the class to shut up. I called a conference with the principal because I felt that a teacher should not be allowed to tell any child not just my child to shut up. I met with the principal Dr. Anthony Chalmers whom told me verbatim out his mouth "you can't tell black kids to be quiet, you have to tell them to shut up". It showed me then that my child was not appropriate for this particular environment. I was already making preparations to put my child in DPS. On yesterday Ms. Bellamy called to tell me my son had urinated on himself after talking to my son he says because he was scared to ask her to go to the bathroom because she told the kids not to call her name for nothing. I informed Ms. Bellamy that my mother would come and pick him up because it made no sense to just take clothes and not have him properly washed to just change clothes and school was to get out less than 3 hours, and she understood. My mother stays less than 10 mins away from the school and when my mother got to the school my son was waiting in the bathroom by himself with no one in the classroom to care for him. Now I am almost sure that the policy in this event that a child in the event of a accident should be waiting in the principals office waiting for whomever is to pick the child up. I will be filing a complaint with Healthy Starts Board and I am currently working on other things to get this school exposed. I have popped up and witnessed some unpleasant things. The children are treated so horribly!!.....PARENTS PARENTS please pop in on your child or children because the instructors are horrible and if the principal represents the instructors then you can only imagine the way he really feels. I can go on and on but I just would like to warn anyone that knows any child or have friends with children that go to HSA please make them aware and to please be actively involved because words from an office staff "HSA has sorry parents because they are not involved!!" Please get involved and make it known that you care and your child is important and you do care about the way they are TREATED!!!
One of the best Charter School in Durham.
