The Helen Bumpus Gallery is a non profit Art Gallery located in the Duxbury Free Library. It exhibits artists work form the New England area. The Gallery was started and founded by Helen McBurnie Bumpus of Duxbury in 1968.
The Helen Bumpus Gallery was founded in 1968 with a gift from Helen McBurnie Bumpus, who was born in 1891 and died at the age of 92 in 1983 in Duxbury. Her gift to the town established an art gallery in the rotunda of the original 1909 building that housed the Duxbury Free Library. The Helen Bumpus Gallery is now located in the center of the new Duxbury Free Library.
The Helen Bumpus Gallery is active in the local arts community. Many of our exhibitors over the years have been juried show artists with the Duxbury Art Association, the Art Complex Museum and the Scituate Arts Association.
The Gallery also engages in joint undertakings with other organizations in the community. Most recently, it co-sponsored with the Wildlands Trust an exhibit of nature photography. The Gallery is a member of the Cultural Alliance, which coordinates a series of arts events each year on a specific theme. In 2005 the theme was Asian and the gallery exhibited the work of Hiroko Lee and sponsored a Feng Shui talk entitled "Feng Shui Overlay" in a local Duxbury garden by a Feng Shui business, Healing Gardens of Marblehead, MA.
