After making furniture for several years I now am enjoying transforming pieces of wood into something thing that I and the client will call an heirloom.
I have always had an admiration of trees and the natural beauty of wood. Many times in my life I visited my brother Daniel’s cabinet making shop, learning from him many valuable skills. After my career in the Air Force (34 years, enlisted, officer, and contractor), my wife and I designed and built our home, which included my dream wood shop. It was put to good use quickly by personally doing all of the design and finishing work for the house interior. We trimmed and built cabinets with cherry and an eleven foot tall family room wall unit made from walnut. I then started to make custom furniture for a couple of interior designers including my son, Jason. I helped build the prototypes of his line of furniture, which was a particularly enjoyable experience.
My personal style has shifted more toward a functional art. I would not yet call my self an artist, but when I look at an unusual piece of wood my head spins around until I figure out a unique and interesting way to use it. Many times the inspiration of what I desire to make and how it will look comes from the natural beauty of that piece of wood. I particularly enjoy making each piece a unique one-of-a-kind heirloom, and I don't use that term lightly. I don't just want to make a table, but make a table that will be passed down from generation to generation. When those people see my name on the bottom of the piece I hope they will know it was made paying attention to every detail, built structurally strong, and pleasing to the eye.
My assistants, Jimmy and Philip, are not only my right and left hands but also my friends. We collaborate on each piece we make. I wouldn’t say what we do is work, because nothing this enjoyable can be called work. My wife, Carla, always has a “ less is more” perspective and guides us on the critical design features. Speck, our loving family dog, craves and demands attention as he freely goes in and out of the pet door between the shop and yard.
100% satisfaction. We will ship your heirloom piece with the utmost care.
