I’ve been going to Hessel Park for years and previously had a very high opinion and would often recommend other graduate students to their office, both for regular cleanings and for more extensive work since I had to get a lot of work due to an accident and everyone was great at explaining treatments, options, and costs. Recently, I had an experience that left me feeling uneasy. I had a different hygienist than I usually do and she said that my wisdom teeth weren’t looking good. When Dr. Nielsen I usually have Dr. Stevenson came by, she spent a short time looking at my teeth, said nothing about my wisdom teeth, and had completely left before the hygienist called her back to take a look at my x-rays and Dr. Nielsen said I should get them taken out. I knew that they would have to come out eventually but no concerns had been raised for the past four years that I’ve been coming to the same office. It was unclear to me if anything changed with my wisdom teeth that makes it more imperative to get them out now. When I asked when I should get them taken out, she couldn’t really provide an answer and seemed like she was in a hurry so I didn’t get a chance to ask if there had been any change to my teeth that had raised these concerns. I usually feel like this office does a really good job of explaining treatment plans and issues so this really caught me off guard and the visit left me feeling very unsure as to the state of my teeth. Additionally, I usually get asked if I want fluoride and told how much it costs while I’m in the chair so I wasn’t surprised when I had a balance due at the counter. This hygienist just asked me if the flavor was okay and applied it. As I mentioned, I refer graduate students here so I would hate for anyone to be surprised by an additional cost or not have the opportunity to deny this treatment if wanted. Not as important, obviously, but I think a really nice touch of this office is that they usually ask what toothbrush you use so they can get you a compatible head if you have an electric one and I was not asked this time. Not a big deal, but given everything else, it added to the feeling of this being a really rushed and uncomfortable appointment.
Dr Nielsen was very thorough & very polite. She was honest in telling me what I needed to have done. She took the time to take care of more than I was scheduled for today so I wouldn’t have to make an extra long distance trip. I’m very impressed with her, her tech & the entire office! It is a super clean & efficient office.
I have had a great experience with Hessel Park Family Dentist. Their staff is very friendly and they communicate well. Your comfort is very important to them and they act with kindness. Front desk staff knows how to check your insurance and accurately tells you what is covered and what your cost will be. Five stars just for that! . I highly recommend!
My teeth have always been a wreck. The work never ends. It has been this way my whole life. This practice has been such a gift. They provided a thorough treatment plan, I do it at my pace. They are amazing with pain management. I never feel a thing. Very efficient. No waiting around. They track my insurance deductibles and coverage for me. I’m new to Champaign. Hessel Park Dentistry was a major find. I heart them for helping me save my teeth.

I get great care here, and I'm dropping serious money for it for a retired person. I want to observe that I have been looking at a shabby area around the men's bathroom sink -- paint in bad shape on the wall behind the sink and on the wouldn't cover of the box above the sink. I would like to see this fixed particularly in light of my next $550 bill. Suggest you spend $10 of this money on some paint.
Dr. Neilson has made my best interests her priority. I first visited out of emergency and we’ve since mapped out a plan to get me back on the winning side of dental health. Dr. Neilson is patient, communicates well, realizes her goal and works efficiently to maintain my comfort. 10/10 I’m thankful to be a patient of hers.
All of the medical professionals were extremely kind and thoughtful as they worked with my 4 year old. They made the experience fun, and even managed to clean his teeth. We'll definitely come back for his next appointment
This is the best dentist office I have ever been to. Very friendly staff. Beautiful, clean office. Efficient, thorough care.
I've been going here often on for a few years. Went in yesterday after having pain for 2 days and was pretty much immediately dismissed and told if I wanted an extraction I had to go see an oral surgeon. All because I refuse to have a root canal on a back tooth and just want it yanked? They don't have the machines there to scan to see if a root canal is even possible! Getting into an oral surgeon will take months and I'm in horrible pain now. Amazing how the website advertises extractions and I know people that have had their teeth pulled there. So now I get to suffer because they refused to just pull the tooth. I guess if they don't get extra money for caps and everything else they're not going to help you. I had to go back and forth to have a filling refilled after they told me it was broken. Really? They finally agreed to do that, but refused to help my immediate situation which is why I was there. Also be aware of all the extra bills you will receive when going here. I always pay what I am told treatment will cost and like magic, more bills arrive. Hopefully I am seeing a different dentist on Tuesday if I make it through the weekend.
