Our Story

Hewer Hardware first made its appearance in the 1920's as Hewer’s Hardware. The store was opened by Gordon Cameron Hewer who was born in Ontario. In 1921 he moved to Vancouver from Nanton, Alberta with his wife Flora and their two daughters, Marjorie and Genievive. When Gordon Hewer died in 1942, Marjorie and her husband, John Edward Watson continued to run the family business until they sold it to Mr. Bill Stokes who was an employee at the store. (note updated information provided by Joan Lewall, granddaughter of Gordon Hewer) Mr. Stokes renovated the store to its current state in 1973. From an all wood frame store with a garage in the back, it was completely modernized to a cinder block/concrete building except for one wall on the west side of the building towards the front. The remaining wood frame consists of solid 2x12 lumber on edge, nailed together as a solid wall. This amazing framing was discovered during recent renovations and merchandising inside the store.

The store in turn was sold to Mr. Jafir an immigrant from Uganda. He did not make any changes that we know of. But University Hardware had opened up across the street and a block away. West Point Grey had two hardware stores for a period between the 1960's and 1990's.

In 1978, two brothers from South Africa, Leong and Por Tung, purchased the business from Mr. Jafir. The two brothers worked hard and rebuilt the business and its clientele. After many sucessful years of running the store, Leong retired in 1992 and Por retired in 2005. Bernard Lau, Leong’s son started working in 1990 and purchased the business from his father in 2008.

The store has changed many times since 1978. It has operated as an independent under the Merchant and Pro Hardware banners. Finally in 1986, Hewer Hardware joined the Home Hardware family. The store’s interior has been changed and re-merchandized on many occasions.

In the Fall of 2008, the interior ceiling was raised to reveal the beautiful wood beams and joists. The most recent change is the addition of our Seasonal Showroom at 4453 West 10th, the building next door to the east. The retail level now joins the main store through an opening in wall between two buildings. And just this spring, in the back of the showroom, a year round full service Garden Centre was added.

Although there are many changes to the store, one thing remains a constant. We love retail and we love our customers. We always strive to provide the best customer experience in our store by having a great product mix and a smile on our face.

We thank all our regular customers for the many years that they have supported us and if you are new or not so new in the neighbourhood or in Vancouver, we would love to meet you soon.

This place is criminally overpriced. I went in to have a couple keys copied - total cost $13.49. Apparently they charge $5.99 per key! Blight's Home Hardware on Dunbar charges $3.99. Gandy's Home Hardware on Broadway charges $4.29. Coe Lumber on Broadway charges $3.95 I'm fine paying a little extra for the conveniences of a local hardware store, but there's a line that can be crossed where the upcharge becomes taking advantage of the community. That's where Hewer is. All the local options are behaving in a more decent and reasonable manner to their customers. Never going back to Hewer for ANYTHING. You've lost another customer.
I bought a few things from this hardware store, which I didn’t not end up using and they were in the same condition that I bought them new. As I am returning the items, the front old asian cashier lady did not like that I was returning my items and was just being rude and dismissive. I bought some electric tape from a different store from the same chain which I had on me with the receipt; I asked her if I could return the electric tape and before I could even finish my sentence, she responded with a “no we don’t carry this”. I was surprised and asked her “you don’t carry electrical tape in a hardware store?” Which she just responded with “yes” and walked away. I walked around the store later looking to buy a lock and to my *surprise* they carried the same exact tape that I had. Anyways, it’s disappointing to see a person with this type of attitude working there when everyone else was great and helped me out in the best way possible.
I looked up where to buy play sand for a project I was undertaking filling a new umbrella stand and found some at Hewer Home Hardware, priced at $8.69, and in stock. Arrived and when I went to pay the cashier said it would be $9.99 plus tax. I mentioned the website price was lower. It was the exact same item. She said no, we charge the $9.99, and it does not matter what the website advertising is. I paid but went away unhappy. It's not about the small price difference, but rather the misleading advertising.
Great location. Very helpful staff and nice to talk too. Much better than going to the bigger places. Ants gone in 2 days thanks to their advice!!!
Love this store. It has a small town vibe and very friendly staff that make it welcoming and warm. I don’t usually leave reviews, but the owner, Bernard, was so helpful to me and my partner and I wanted to share. We needed some stuff pack/wrap up a bike for a flight and he was incredibly friendly, helpful and generous. The rest of the staff seemed so friendly as well! Very kind experience that I’ll always remember.
Super friendly, professional but sweet and laid back staff, super helpful and knowledgeable and went out of their way to help me to find exactly what I was looking for without me even asking them to! They also have the cutest displays all the time and in my opinion the best lil garden centre in the area. Will definitely be making this location my “home” hardware :-
Will was very nice and pleasant to talk to, patient and knowledgeable in the electrical department. He helped me when I came in to buy a old ballast for my fluorescence light fixture, when he informed me that they had quit making this brand for over 10 years to my surprise. He helped me with the proper replacement and when I got home to install it. Everything worked out fine. Thank you Will.
I love this Home Hardware! They may appear small from the front entrance but the store expands into quite a few different sections. They always have everything I'm looking for from garden and plants, home decor, house repairs and other random odds and ends. The staff are always available and so helpful and friendly. There is always parking outside, never any line ups and they have great plant sales! I always opt to go here first before trying home depot!
First time to shop at Hewer Home Hardware and highly recommended. Friendly staff and very helpful. Staff helped me bring bags of mushroom compost to my car. He was super friendly and courteous. The store looks small on the outside but there are plenty of products inside the store. Store's covid protocols are in place with alcohol hand sanitizer outside the door for customers to use and physical distancing when lining up to pay.
Really friendly staff! They helped me pick out a few houseplants and gave me thorough care instructions for each one I bought. Prices were very reasonable too. I got 4 medium-sized plants and 2 small ones for a total of $35. I'll definitely be returning.
