High Desert Food & Farm Alliance

About

We are a nonprofit organization supporting Central Oregon's food system by fostering relationships between producers and consumers, increasing awareness of and access to food from our region, and cultivating community participation with local food.

Description

A 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to support a community based food system in Central Oregon to increase access to fresh healthy food, support sustainable farm land use, and foster relationships among farmers and consumers.

High Desert Food and Farm Alliance Programs:

Seed to Supper- Oregon Food Bank sponsors the Seed to Supper program that is supported by OSU Extension; HDFFA is the Central Oregon satellite partner. We partner with regional organizations to provide a comprehensive 6-week beginning gardening course that gives novice, adult gardeners the tools they need to successfully grow a portion of their own food on a limited budget.

Cooking Matters- For 20 years, Cooking Matters has empowered families with the skills to stretch their food budgets and cook healthy meals so their children get nutritious food at home. As part of the No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America, Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters teaches participants to shop smarter, use nutrition information to make healthier choices and cook delicious, affordable meals. The program utilizes home cooks, professional chefs, and nutritionists who volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on courses that teach adults, teens and kids how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful, safe and tasty ways.

Grow and Give- This program encourages the community to Grow, Glean, or purchase and donate local food to feed the less fortunate in the community. Donate fresh food when you are shopping at your local Farmers Market; HDFFA has representatives at all of the markets listed below; your food will be delivered to local food pantries, kitchens and the NeighborImpact Food Bank.

Nutrition Wellness- In 2010, our Central Oregon Food Needs Assessment revealed a desire by residents to access more healthy fresh fruits and vegetables as well as prioritizing both price and health/nutrition when making food choices. Studies have also found that not having access to food is tied to similar social and economic status with a link to diet-related illnesses and unhealthy eating. While it is difficult to change people’s habits we can make a difference by providing access to nutritional wellness programs that empower people to make healthy choices.

We also help facilitate the Crooked River Open Pasture (CROP) farm tours and pop up markets as well as the High Desert EATS tours.
