Hey does anyone know or even remember that from the years of 1988-1995 the tv show series In the Heat of the Night was filmed here. This square in Covington GA by the famous courthouse of Newton County is also where they filmed a lot of scenes for the courtrooms, and where Bill Gillespies wife district attorney Harriet Delong!! All of the actors who played the characters so well are still around except for Carroll O Connor who died sadly in 2001. The school was also filmed there where Miss tibbs played by Anne Marie Johnson was a school teacher and someone who always would help out others in need. Or she would turn over to the sherriff chief William O' Bill Gillespie. Now her husbands character played by Howard Rollins died in 1996 from drug overdose. Sadly we lost him in 1996!! Also Hugh O Connor died in 1995 from suicide, he played Lonnie Jamison, the chiefs son!! He was only like 32 or 33 i think? There were also a lot of guest stars that were featured on the show like Pat Hingle, James Best, Claude Akins, Ed Ames, etc. And many many more. I can t wait to visit the town and see the locations they filmed at. Also Alan Autry comes back to town with some of the other actors every year. I have a terminal in Lithonia GA where my trucking company is located at that isnt too far away from Covington GA. I hope to go there someday.
