I’m not sure if the college is open to the public anymore. The building is In incredible shape for being from the 1800’s. You can tell someone owns this property and has been taken care of it. However with how tall the grass has grown around the property, I don’t think they have had anyone on the property for some time. I’m not even sure where the “visitor parking” is supposed to be, there is signs that can only be suggesting towards a gravel path that leads to a house on the property. Shown in pic I’m also not certain if anyone lives here but of course be respectful if you do visit. Does this visit deserve 5 stars? No, it truly doesn’t because of the inability to figure out if the location is even open anymore, let alone who to contact for information. However I believe it deserves credit for keeping the property in this great of shape, and I believe it could easily be a location that is on a pre booked tour basis. Edit: All the photos I took were from the windows, please don’t try to break and enter in this historic landmark. It’s not worth it to look at basically one big room you can see from the outside. Keep our history protected
I'm glad to see it is being taken care of! I would like to know who the owners are!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entryFree
In 1858, wife’s great-great-great grandfather helped establish this college near Madison, IN, for those deemed unworthy of an education. Make an appointment for a tour via their FaceBook page.
I went there a couple days ago and it's such a beautiful place full of interesting history. I'd definitely recommend going and donating so it can be restored.
It has some great history and I look forward to the day it opens as a museum. You can only walk around outside of it right now.
This beautiful historic building is slowly and carefully being restored to it's original glory. The history behind this site is important. It was one of the first colleges to accept students regardless of race or gender. It is moving to learn this history and unsettling. Definitely take a tour if it is available.
Beautiful historic landmark building.
My Great Great Great Grandfather Thomas Craven coordinated the building of this school for ALL people during a time of great civil unrest over the slavery issue. My Great Grandfather Herman John Craven was born here and became an engineer and moved to Utah where I John Craven now reside. It was amazing to come and touch some of my Family History. It was amazing to talk to so many who are researching my family!!
My two fourth generation aunts were graduates of Eleutherian College: Virginia Harris and Lettie Harris. Their father, Rev. Joseph Harris, was a member and supporter of the Neil's Creek Anti-Slavery Society.
Lovely structure with a fascinating history. Glad to see efforts made to preserve a place founded on such progressive ideals at a crossroads in history.
