Homegrown Healthcare Alternative Wellness Apothecary and Learning Center
Catherine and Glenn Lewis recently acquired a familiar building on the corner of Rte. 202 and the Stanley Road in Winthrop. The former Tri-State Fire, Police Equipment Center has been extensively renovated to include office and retail space, and it is now open as Homegrown Healthcare Alternative Wellness Apothecary and Learning Center.
“Our vision for the creation of the business was to bring in a complete wellness and learning center specializing in cannabis and other alternative therapies. We want to offer people a way to improve their health naturally including mind, body, and spirit. We are now an apothecary, a learning center and doctor’s offices, all under one roof.” Catherine explains.
The facility is designed to be one stop wellness experience and includes four entities.
Homegrown Healthcare
Catherine and Glenn’s business offers cannabis and non-cannabis related products. The apothecary provides books, other quality herbal medicines, tinctures, butters, salves, oils, lotions, child resistant storage containers, nutritional supplements and vitamins. Catherine wants to emphasize that the enterprise is not “just a weed store.” You can find “Made in Maine” herbs, soaps, art and more. Some of the brands you can find there are: Fiber Art by Jennifer Shaw(featured artist of the quarter), BlueMoose Art, Ethereal Opus Design, cbd dog biscuits from Sticky Bud Farm, cbd lotions and soap from Healing Harbors, cbd tinctures from Palmetto Harmony, essential oil blends from Hippie Chick and Top Secret Extracts.
The Lewis’ strongly value the role education and information sharing plays in maintaining health. Opening the first Maine Cannabis Education center maintaining the Mind, Body, Spirit theme, they offer yoga, Reiki and other wellness practices alongside workshops in growing and making various medicinal products, like balms, tinctures, butters and other things as an alternative to the smoking form of cannabis. They also use the classroom space for community groups to use for support group meetings. They actively support cancer survivors, people in addiction recovery and veterans. Catherine also advises people on new business formation. Helping with the LLC, federal and state sales tax and licensing processes.
“There are a lot of people who use medical marijuana, and don’t want to smoke it, so we have a commercial kitchen here that we use to create capsules, suppositories, tinctures, oils, and a variety of medicinal edibles. They also rent the kitchen space to those caregivers who wish to produce their own cannabis products and must, by State law, make their products in a licensed kitchen.
Catherine says most of Homegrown Healthcare’s clientele are over 40, are not willing to smoke, and are looking for alternatives like capsules, tinctures and lotions. Some cancer patients seek suppositories to avoid the psychoactive effects of cannabis. If they have to take a high dose, with suppositories they are still be able to function.
“A lot of people come in and see that we have supplies, but they don’t know what to do with them. So we have the classes on a variety of subjects. We want the public to know that no matter what age they are, they can come in and learn about cannabis and its many benefits. We want to empower others to take control of their own health naturally. Growing cannabis and converting the plant to products they can use themselves is therapeutic in and of itself. People should know that they don’t have to have a medical marijuana card to visit us.” However a card is required to designate their services as caregivers, to purchase any product containing THC per State of Maine Law.
Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine (MMCM)
MMCM moved to the new facility from Augusta. MMCM is a trade association for caregivers and patients dedicated to the support and promotion of safe access to medical marijuana. In 1999, Maine became one of the first states in the country to legalize cannabis for medical use. Voters passed a citizens initiative in 2009, allowing a person who has a doctor’s certification to purchase medical cannabis from a caregiver or dispensary.
MMCM was formed as a Trade Association in 2010 to provide advocacy and education for Maine following the passage of the Medical Marijuana Initiative. MMCM also hosts an annual trade show in the spring.
New England Cannabis Consulting
Shanna Souza is proprietor of New England Cannabis Consulting. She has been in the medicinal cannabis field for the past three years and is devoted to helping individuals work through their health-related issues. With medical cannabis becoming a more widely accepted alternative treatment, Souza knows it’s important for everyone, including healthcare practitioners, to understand how it can be used.
New England Cannabis Consulting helps clients develop a full understanding of the benefits of medical cannabis and the changing landscape of medicinal cannabis. Shanna is developing workshops to help educate practitioners in their offices and seminars for continuing educations credits with guest speakers discussing such topics covering studies have shown that cannabis extracts can help kill certain cancer cells, reduce the size of other cancer cells in the body, enhance the cancer-killing effects of radiation and reduce debilitating side effects from chemotherapy and radiation.
Canna Care Docs of Maine
Canna Care Docs of Maine have a branch office at the center, as well. They are licensed specialists who possess an extensive, working knowledge of medical cannabis benefits. They do medical cannabis education and recommendations.
