Houston City Hall

Description

The Houston City Hall building is the headquarters of the city of Houston's government. It was constructed in 1938-1939, and is located in Downtown Houston. It is surrounded by skyscrapers and very similar to dozens of other city halls built in the southwest United States during the same time period. It is flanked by Tranquility Park and the Houston Public Library. The simply designed structure featured many construction details that have helped to make this building an architectural classic.HistoryFrom 1841 to 1939, Houston's municipal government was headquartered at Old Market Square. It was destroyed by fire in the 1870s, and also in 1901, and rebuilt each time. In those days, City Hall was part of the lively commercial atmosphere of the Square. However, by the 1920s, the city leaders decided the site was no longer appropriate for their needs. In 1929, the city's planning commission urged the establishment of a civic center around a downtown park, Herman Square. However, the Great Depression sidetracked the plans for the new center. When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted the Works Progress Administration program, the city applied for a WPA grant to help finance the construction of a new City Hall. The grant was approved, and construction began in March 1938, continuing for 20 months.

A nice architectural building that is worth a visit if you are in the area. It has a park near it and both provide a nice change from the modern architecture that surrounds the building. While in the area, also remember to visit the nearby old library which has some beautiful architectural features. Also go underground and visthe many tunnels under the city. These tunnels house many food courts and would be much better than walking at street level when the weather is too hot. Enjoy, Thank you.
This place is downtown it's a historical building tranquility Park the small tranquility pond in front centrally-located to everything pretty much downtown on if you need to go to City Hall this is a beautiful building to go to the one down there for the rodeo for the trail ride finalized there's so much to do downtown such beautiful buildings historical area is a lot to do#rodeo#trailride #houston livestock rodeo is there a real place to check out whether it's during the day ring the evening when the lights are there is a real nice place to check out downtown destination even if it's just to take pictures I would recommend checking this area out the bums aren't too bad next to the Houston library every year we do this it's where the parade for the rodeo in the races start took a bunch of pictures to add this year hope you guys enjoy had a great time like subscribe for more great reviews
Very nice but it's a shame the Mayor r has no respect for Houston's history along with "judge" Hildalgo. They let bums parade and takeover the City Hall at night instead of having events for children, security, and food trucks to make this a festive and inclusive part of downtown. Thankfully, the bums are not violent and will leave you alone for most part
It's city hall. Went there for a interview. You really feel "Old Houston " once you enter the building that's not a bad thing to me since I love history and retro things. If going you'll either park on the street and pay the meter $2/hour or have to park in a parking garage a block or two away.

A favorite spot to walk dogs or bike at night... always beautifully lit and the park is well tended.
First I'd like to say that I've never been inside the building, however, I've been around the area and park right across from it. It's a nice and calm area one can enjoy if the weather permits.
The grass in the front is always keep trimmed. They have a beautiful walking area with a fountain. There is plenty of parking and phones can be charged around the hall. Houston TX just made the civil side just that much more safe. There are some mosquitos but it's the bayou.
Houston City Hall located on Hermann Square was built in the stripped neo-classical style by the Worker's Progress Administration WPA in the 1930s. The City of Houston Visitor's Center is located on the north Walker St. side of the building. They have a gift shop and brochures on attractions in the Greater Houston area.
The only problem we encountered was that all seats around the pond were occupied by our homeless friends.
