Howard Hardware Storehouse

Description

The Howard Hardware Storehouse is a historic storage building off Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Built about 1895, it is a surviving reminder of the city's railroad-related economic past, built in a distinctive tetrahedral shape to accommodate nearby railroad lines. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.Description and historyThe Howard Hardware Storehouse is located on the far eastern side of the island formed by the Connecticut River to the east, and the Bellows Falls Canal to the west. It is set north of Bridge Street, east of a modern service station, which separates it from the Adams Gristmill Warehouse, another historic rail-related storage facility. Immediately to its north runs the railroad line of the Boston and Maine Railroad, shortly before it crosses the river into New Hampshire. To its west runs the curving route of a former railroad siding, the tracks now removed, that gave access to the rail yard on the north end of the island. Because of these two lines, the building has a tetrahedral rather than rectangular shape. It is a 1-1/2 story frame structure, with a gable roof and clapboard siding. It is mounted on granite piers, and is oriented with its primary gabled facade facing the former siding to the west. This facade, and the eastern one, each have a single sliding freight door made of beaded vertical boarding; there are also two freight doors on the long north facade. The warehouse was built about 1895, and was originally attached to a coalshed and second storehouse (neither still standing) that belonged to the hardware and farm supply business of L.G. and C.E. Howard, whose retail location was in the main square of Bellows Falls. This location provided easy means for the business to offload goods shipped by rail, and transport them to its store. The building is one of a small number of surviving vernacular commercial structures related to Bellows Falls' railroad-influenced past.

A fantastic local run hardware store that has everything you might need without any markups one might expect from a smaller store. The staff are very helpful and kind and it's fantastic to have them in town.
Very happy to have a local hardware store of J&H's quality. Great selection of goods, a UPS drop point, and exceedingly helpful/friendly staff.
they sold me a lawn mower that doesn't cut grass and blades were rusted and now they're telling me I can't return it ... so much for shopping local ... never again I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS STORE THEY DO NOT STAND BY THEIR PRODUCTS!!!!!
Everything you would be looking for in a small town hardware store is right in those 4 walls. The people that work there are amazing, the prices are reasonable and it's a very well lit and well kept location in a historic area. Very neat.
This is a small town hardware store. As such you can find a little of just about everything in here. From basic kitchen items to tools and nuts and bolts. The staff are friendly. They have a full line of painting supplies and can custom mix paints for you. They also do rentals for equipment like floor sanders and pressure washers.
Nice little hardware store. Nicely staffed. Has most every thing you need. Very handy . Its not a box store for lumber, but it's much faster to get a part in a localy owned store.
For starters nice to have local business very much still in business. To go in there and for the most part staff knows my name always friendly and sincere along with a thanku no matter how small purchase.Syong believer in shopping local as well as supporting small businesses rather than alternative big box chains ect..
If you can't find it anywhere else, its because you did not try J&H Hardware. They either have it, 97% of the time or they will get for you.
The best local hardware store around! They don't have everything in the world. They have just what you need. More important, they have plenty of staff who are there to help right away. No more hunting for an orange vest in a giant store!
I loved my first trip to this hardware store. I like to support local, and stay away from big box stores if at all possible. I was greeting by a lively staff and read off my list of needs: kerosene lamp chimneys, old fashioned double coat hooks, a counter brush, and blackboard paint. I was personally shown to each of the things I needed, and in a couple cases had choices. Great guy, witty banter, cool selection, and supporting a local hardware store. I was pleased. Bellows Falls Square has a lot to offer.
