Howard's Chowder Shack in Scituate, Rhode island

They have the best clam chowder which is why we drove 2 hours to get there. Not only is their clam chowder great, all their seafood dishes are. The batter isn't heavy nor is the food greasy despite it being fried. The place isn't a restaurant, there is no inside seating. You order at a window and take the tray to either side of the building to picnic tables and eat there. These areas are covered but open to the elements/breezes as there are no walls or windows so it is perfect for warm days to enjoy the outside without baking under the sun. It is closed in winter. The prices are reasonable to moderate and the portions are generous.

They’re very nice to us. Excellent lobster rolls, clam chowder and captain’s platter. We highly recommend.

Omg they have the best bacon cheddar fries ever. I have had also had the cheese burger it was delicious. I love going to the shack. I am never disappointed here. You must bring cash here however because they don't take debit or creditcards.

UPDATE:Howard's Chowder Shack closed at least two years ago. I went on their last day for one final meal. Howard and his wife moved to Florida. The people who have it now, renamed it. Howard would never put his name on the lousy food they serve. My five stars were for Howard and his wife. I did go once after it reopened with a new name and new people. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. The service, wait time and quality of the food is subpar. The menu is way too large for a place of its size. I miss the old Howard's Chowder Shack. I feel sad each time I drive past it.

New owners have taken this over an rebranded it, The shack. I came across this place randomly and I'm glad I did! Huge portions, great prices, and friendly owners! Definitely try this one out!!!!!! The atmosphere and food make you feel as though your on a beach without all that sand eating and enormous food lines!

The clam chowder tasted like corn chowder they put shrimp and corn in Clam Chowder? Who does that ,not very flavorful the clam cakes where big but no clams not much flavour Will not order there again.Did not try the other food they offer so maybe it's better .

Delicious fish and chips! The fries were really good and we’ll seasoned. Good coleslaw too.

Stopped for a "quick bite" on date night. Waited almost 40 minutes for my food to be wrong. All we ordered was a BUTTER lobster roll and chowder. 40 minutes later recieved a lobster roll with mayo and no spare time left for me to ask for a new order - I only had a sitter for so long... Hence "quick bite" which took forever and I wasn't even able to eat because I specially ordered butter for a reason. My husband woofed what he could down in 3 minutes and decided to throw it out because it was "garbage" - don't stop here unless u have plenty of time and don't care what you eat !!

Love this place. The clam cakes are always perfect. The chowder is excellent, one of the best I have had. Unfortunately if it's a cold and/or rainy day the outdoor picnic tables are not as enticing as on a nice summer day. I have only had the chowder and clam cakes but judging by the steady stream of customers even on a miserable day I think their other seafood offerings are of the same quality.

This little place makes Iggy's even more the sad seafood experience that it is. Fish and shrimp is fabulous. Can't wait to go back to try the chowder and clamcakes and lobster roll. French fries could be real homemade fries for an outstanding fish and chips experience. Hint hint. I spoke to owner with my opinion of the clams, I like my bellies to burst with moist flavor. Basically, this place is a total winner. If you don't try it for more than ice cream, your loss. Congratulations to you and your family.
