Howard Theatre

Description

The Howard Theatre is a historic theater, located at 620 T Street, Northwest, Washington, D.C. Opened in 1910, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.In its heyday, the theater was known for catering to an African-American clientele, and had played host to many of the great Black musical artists of the early and mid-twentieth century. The Howard Theatre was billed as the "Theater of the People," and supported two theatrical organizations, the Lafayette Players and the Howard University Players. In September 2010 extensive renovations were started to restore the theater to its former glory. The theater reopened on April 9, 2012 to headline acts like Wanda Sykes, Blue Oyster Cult, and Chaka Khan, all appearing in the first month since reopening.Early historyConstructed in 1910, the theater was founded and owned by the National Amusement Company, a white-owned group. When built, it had a capacity of more than 1,200. Designed by J. Edward Storck, the theater featured orchestra and balcony seats and eight proscenium boxes, with a lavishly decorated interior. No less extravagant was the exterior, which combined elements of the Beaux-Arts, Italian Renaissance, and neoclassical styles. The whole was surmounted by a larger than life statue of Apollo playing his lyre.

Great place, lots of historical significance and beautiful design. All staffers and their bartenders were really professional. The upstairs seats were great for us older folks, but the floor by the stage looked like a happening place to be during the concert. I like that upstairs seats were built in such a way that there was no way for the people ahead of you to block your view. Sound system was great. Definitely will be checking it out again for more live music events.
Staff is friendly and accommodating and security was nice and played a hilarious role in the show. I know the seating is temporary but the chairs were actually so hard but butt fell asleep during the show. Halfway thru? Like pins and needles. Please increase the padding or curve these things!
The Howard Theater is awesome! I was there for an ABBA dance show. I had so much fun. The building was clean and very comfortable. The bathroom was very clean and sanitary. I will definitely be returning to the Howard Theater again.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Had a great time at Howard theater the night they hosted the Dancing Queen party Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Bathroom downstairs give you a minute to cool down. The drinks are pricey but on the same level as other bars and clubs in dc.
This is a beautiful theater! The staff was amazing! Very friendly. My husband and I came to The Howard to see Patrick Hinds's book tour. It was the perfect setting for him to tell his story. The bar was perfect. It was a little pricey for two drinks but those drinks were very well made. I hope one day I can attend this venue again.
Second time here! So much fun Balcony seats secure your view but I do prefer general standing admission. Jumping and vibing the bad part is definitely that it isn't short-people-friendly The staff were friendly and funny. They also provided ice water after the show. The A/C was not on that day so it was a bit hard when waiting for the show to start. Not sure who offered -- but they started to pass bottle water to the audience super grateful!
Taylor Swift show last night was outstanding. I was very impressed by the DJ and how they were able to pull off unlimited hours for Swift tracks but they did it. The venue is large and most of the actions took place down stairs but I did have a chance to visit upstairs and I have to say the view was amazing. Loved the bartender especially him being a nuggets fan. I will definitely come back. The staff looked like they had as much fun as us
The venue is great, and the majority of the staff is very friendly, but sadly it appears that there is still some cultural sensitivity training that needs to happen at this theater. What is equally sad is that I am sure this review will not make a difference. I went to the Howard theater yesterday for the flamenco show to celebrate my mom's birthday and to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month. Immediately after the show, I mean within the first few minutes my mom had to go to the bathroom to which I sat down and waited for her on the sofas they have in the waiting area adjacent to the bathrooms. There were about four of us waiting for ladies to come out of the bathroom, I was the only Hispanic among them, everyone else was white, and I was sitting on one of the sofas checking my phone. It's at this time that one of the security guys who later would tell me his name is Calvin, comes directly at me, and tells me that I need to get going, that there is another show coming, and that essentially this isn't a spot to hang around in. Meanwhile, there are three other people also waiting but says nothing to them, it was directed at me. Furthermore it was the disrespectful way in his approach, it is not as if he was saying it politely in any way. To which I tell him I'm waiting for my mom, he says that's ok and continues to blurb something to which I tell him I'm not sitting for my health, it is obvious that it's just a bathroom waiting area not a lounge, as he walks away and says he is not going to get into a back and forth with me. It was so blatantly obvious that he targeted me for being Hispanic that the gentleman to my right had to come over and almost apologize for what happened and said he saw the whole thing and that it had nothing to do with me just sitting there. Calvin had to walk past three other white men also waiting for people to come out of the bathrooms to come to tell me to leave, it was that targeted. I work for a National Latino non-profit, and this type of institutional racism embedded in our culture is the type of thing we try to fight across the country. The unfortunate thing is that Calvin will probably not think he has done anything wrong. Sadly racism is seen across minorities all the time, and we don't even realize it. So this is a message to Calvin and to the rest of the security staff at the Howard Theater: there will be Hispanics coming to watch the flamenco show this week. Please treat them with as much respect as you would treat the white guests who will be arriving.
It's beautiful inside . The DJ was so horrible, but the asthetics were pleasing. We left early, and I can't stress how horrible the DJ was again. The 5 stars are for the venue. It was an R and B 90s experience we paid 50 dollars per ticket for. And we heard repeat songs like 5 times. Multiple songs were repeated. The 90s had a wealth of music to use, and I ended up listening to a playlist on repeat. I'd love my money back, but it won't happen. Good place, bad experience.
Great show, great atmosphere, tried accessing the box office early on, was not to pleased with the appearance as l approached. There was homeless people set up and living on every inch of the property. Just not a good feeling or look for such an historic venue for the DMV. Box office hours were nowhere to be displayed that l could see or even try to see with all the homeless people on the surroundings.
