We help people fix pain and injury issues that they have been unable to solve. We also work with pain-free people interested in learning how to get more out of their workouts, spend their time more efficiently, prevent injuries, and develop balance. We take functional strength and fluid athletic movement to a new level. Most people have an elevated injury risk they are unaware of and are seriously inefficient with how they spend their time exercising. Let's change that.
We work with many professional, olympic, and collegiate athletes. But we do not only work with athletes. We definitely don’t want people to misunderstand and think that Human Movement Lab is just for athletes. While we love working with athletes, if we had to pick a demographic to specialize in, it would be “normal” people of all ages who don’t necessarily have athletic goals but just want to feel good, age well, be strong, and maintain fluid movement. The movement principles that help athletes win championships are the same ones that help your grandfather fix his back pain.
Movement problems, stability issues, asymmetries, and stiffness develop gradually over time. If we never took our cars in for tune ups, no one would be surprised when our cars broke down or had big problems – but this is how we typically treat our bodies. We “drive” them all the time, but we don’t stop to check the quality of the movement, the left/right balance, and many other things that are important for human bodies to be able to do, regardless of age or activity level. Usually the biggest problems are caused when the ability to move in very basic and fundamental ways is lost. When the basics are gone, the only way we can complete the complex and high level tasks that life demands is to substitute and compensate – to use the wrong strategies to perform tasks, and eventually this is just like bending a paperclip back and forth – it doesn’t cause a problem at first, but eventually it breaks. My parents are in their 60’s and they, their friends, and everyone in their age group needs this approach desperately! At Human Movement Lab, we are for everyone and the energy and feel of all of our facilities is welcoming, comfortable and supportive. Many people that want to get in shape, lower injury risk and learn about fitness are turned off by what they view as stereotypical gym culture and we work hard to create a new type of environment that works for everyone. Call us! Email us! Let’s do this!
Our mission is to help standardize the way everyone measures and corrects basic human movement throughout the lifespan. Variety in exercise choice should only come after the fundamentals. Choosing "what's right for you" comes after the basics are in place. Standardizing the way we measure and correct movement will do for healthcare what the internet has done for communication. The potential is enormous.
Below is a quote from Gray Cook, a founder of FMS and a mentor of ours at Human Movement Lab:
"There are a lot of different kinds of chemists, but they all work off the same periodic table of elements. Mechanics working on internal combustion engines all agree on the principles of internal combustion, even though one may be endorsing Toyota and another may be endorsing GM.
Different disciplines can still have some of the same fundamental baselines. It’s really funny—when we get into fitness, performance and athletics that all use movement, for some reason we invent tests that support our discipline, but that may not create those fundamental parallels."
