Huntington Desert Garden

Description

The Huntington Desert Garden is part of The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. The Desert Garden is one of the world's largest and oldest collections of cacti, succulents and other desert plants, collected from throughout the world. It contains plants from extreme environments, many of which were acquired by Henry E. Huntington and William Hertrich (the first garden curator) in trips taken to several countries in North, Central and South America. One of the Huntington’s most botanically important gardens, the Desert Garden brought together a group of plants largely unknown and unappreciated in the beginning of the 1900s. Containing a broad category of xerophytes (aridity-adapted plants), the Desert Garden grew to preeminence and remains today among the world’s finest, with more than 5,000 species in the 10 acre (4 ha) garden.Mr. Huntington was not initially interested in establishing a Desert Garden. He did not like cacti at all, due to some unfortunate prickly pear encounters during railroad construction work. But Hertrich was persistent, and, once won over, Mr. Huntington built a railway spur to his garden, to bring in rock, soil and plants by the carload. As Gary Lyons, a later curator, remarked, it's very convenient to have a rail spur, and deep pockets, when you're building a big garden. A trip to Arizona in 1908 filled three railroad cars for the trip back to the garden.

The Desert Garden at the Huntington Library is an experience. Walking through the garden felt like stepping into a different world. The diverse and unique cacti and succulents, set against the backdrop of the arid landscape, create a surreal and mesmerizing atmosphere. The way the garden is meticulously curated to showcase the beauty and resilience of desert flora is truly commendable. The highlight for me was the incredible variety of cacti, some towering like giants and others with exotic and intricate shapes.
Oohs and ahhs at every turn! I was fascinated at the seemingly endless colorful variety of all this that grows in a desert! There’s cactus, grasses, shrubs, succulents, trees and wildflowers here. So take a look and experience the unexpected garden of the beautiful desert!
This garden looks other worldly. It was easily my favorite garden at Huntington. People that work on film sets might find it blasé as my companion, in response to my amazement, was like “oh yeah you don’t work on sets”. Me mockingly “Ooooo I’m so cool, I worked on sci-fi movies”. Which is cool, but also let me enjoy these massive cacti.
My favorite sub-garden at Huntington. I was expecting a lot of cactus on rocks as at other desert gardens but I was in for a surprise. This is the first 'lush' desert garden I have seen. The forms, colors, and textures are amazing. It is also huge. Parts of this garden are also 110 years old and you will see some of the largest barrel cacti in the U.S.
Just know better Desert Garden in all of Southern California. It must be a full city block of gorgeous cactuses succulents and palm trees. There are numerous paths through the gorgeous Gardens. During Springtime bloom it's really incredible. But at any time of year it's really amazing and worth checking out.
The Huntington Desert Garden is one of the largest and oldest assemblages of cacti and other succulents in the world. Over 100 years old, it has grown from a small area on the Raymond fault scarp when in 1907-1908 William Hertrich brought in plants from local nurseries, private residences, public parks, and from collection trips to the Southwest and Mexican deserts. Today the two dozen families of succulents and other arid- adapted plants have developed into a 10-acre garden display, the Huntington's most important conservation collection, a vital mission and challenge.
Definitely pick a cool day to explore this part of the garden. There is little shade. The variation of species and locations of origin are amazing. Some of the specimens are over 100 years old. Great planting arrangements to see the ideas of what you may want to do. All are labeled.
One of the most beautiful and interesting gardens at the Huntington. I'm fairly certain Dr. Seuss found inspiration here...
This is an extensive collection of desert plants. Outstanding in presentation and variety.
The gardens are beautiful in April and early May.
