Hyde Observatory is located in Holmes Lake Park. If you're expecting some large domed observatory with a huge telescope like you'd see on some mountain top, then this isn't it. It's a small building with an attached patio that has three decent sized telescopes on it I believe the largest has a 14" mirror. It's great for observing larger brighter objects like the planets in our solar system or the moon. They're only open for public viewing on Saturday nights. Though, there may be other activities and clubs that meet there whenever. Go on a clear night when there's a new moon unless you want to observe the moon, otherwise its bright light washes everything else out. Check their website to be sure of seasonal hours. It's a nice evening activity and fun for all ages. Honestly, when was the last time you looked through a telescope?
Went there on a Saturday evening. Unfortunately a bit cloudy and all close by planets were not visible. But ok, that's what we call nature. The volunteer staff are all super kind and motivated. Explaining everything, answering many questions. Also kids are welcome here.
The Hyde Observatory is a little gem of a place located at Holmes Lake. You can come view the stars, moon, and any planets in view in the night sky FREE OF CHARGE. The volunteers are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and there are presentations available to help you learn more about what you are viewing through the telescopes.
Been going here since I was a child and it has inspired a deep passion for the cosmos in me and a drive to learn more about the universe, beyond the observable. Was able to see the Mars ice caps here.
Awesome volunteers and a great experience for everyone in the family. We are all looking forward to going back.
Very cool views through the telescopes, volunteers were friendly and had lots of cool information to share.
This was a great experience! Everybody was super knowledgeable and friendly. We will be back!
Fascinating, informative and wonderful staff. Great place!
Wow! Look at the stars on Saturday nights. The volunteers are great!
This is a really cool place that I would highly recommend checking out. They have the telescopes out on nice nights where you can look through and the volunteers were incredibly helpful to talk to. They had a little seminar while we were there on Saturn which was interesting and all in all a hidden gem of Lincoln. Be sure to check out the hours they are open before you go and they said the telescopes are weather dependent, but they still do interesting talks and such. Well worth the visit.
