IDSVA(Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts)

About

IDSVA is the first and only school in the United States founded for the sole purpose of providing doctoral studies in philosophy and art theory for visual artists, architects, curators, and creative scholars.

Mission

Traditionally the MFA has served as the terminal degree for studio artists. This degree has trained studio artists in the skills necessary for successful art practice and has prepared artists for teaching in college and university studio art programs. However, there is a strong sense among today's artists and educators that training beyond the MFA would benefit many artists, especially those who grapple with issues surrounding contemporary media and culture.

Insofar as the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts offers to holders of the MFA a PhD in philosophy, aesthetics, and art theory, it addresses an important opportunity for contemporary art and culture.

The measure of this opportunity can be summed up in two points: In the first place, we know that artists and studio art programs are generally relegated to the outskirts and fringes of contemporary colleges and universities. Without the PhD, professors of art are restricted to the studio. They teach the labor of studio practice but rarely are they permitted to engage in the larger questions of philosophy and theory pressing on the status of art today. Consequently, undergraduates and graduate students learn how to make art from artists but they learn about what art means from scholars who do not make art. The PhD in Visual Arts provides the training and credentials necessary to bring art practitioners into the center of the current and extremely important debates on the meaning and function of art in today's world. Their contributions to these debates will benefit students, philosophers, and art historians alike, and will change the way we think about art inside the academy and beyond.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, we know that rigorous training in philosophy and art theory increases an artist's range and vision. Critical thinking sharpens the hand and eye as well as the mind. The artist whose studio practice is informed by the history and philosophy of culture and aesthetics is able to redefine visual art in ways previously unimagined and can tell us things through their art that we otherwise would never know. Such opportunities are hardly limited to the classroom, the gallery, and the museum. They can change the way we see.
