Indianapolis Artsgarden

Description

The Indianapolis Artsgarden is a glassed dome spanning the intersection of Washington and Illinois streets in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. It serves not only as a pedestrian connector between the Circle Centre Mall and nearby buildings, but also as a venue for the display and performance of artistic and musical works (more than 300 performances take place in the Artsgarden each year). In addition, the Artsgarden houses the Cultural Concierge, who provides local arts and cultural information, maps, and visitor guides. The structure, including the walkways connecting it to the adjacent buildings, is owned and operated by the Arts Council of Indianapolis. The Artsgarden was designed by Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects who also designed the adjacent Circle Centre Mall. Blackburn Architects collaborated on the design and execution. The $12 million cost was funded by Lilly Endowment. The floor of the Artsgarden stands above the intersection. A series of arched steel trusses creates a graduated set of glassed vaults, the tallest of which is above the floor and above the street. The design yields a total free-span length of within the dome. A total of of glass is used in the structure to give it an airy, open feel. The entire dome is set on two pairs of 185ft plate girders that diagonally span the intersection. When initially constructed in 1995, the Artsgarden connected the second level of Circle Centre Mall on the southeast corner of the intersection with an upper level of the Claypool Courts on the northwest corner, while stairways provided access to the ground-level sidewalks on the northeast and southwest corners. In 2006 the Conrad Indianapolis was built on the site of the small park that had been on the northeast corner and the stairway there was replaced with a direct connection to the hotel. In 2011 construction was started on a connector to the 16-story PNC Center and Hyatt Regency hotel complex on the southwest corner. The owners of the complex in 1995 had declined to help pay for the connector; in 2010 an agreement was reached to split the $1.2 million cost, allowing fulfillment of the original concept of the Artsgarden. The connector was completed in January, 2012.

Our server, Megan, was magnificent. The facility overall was very nice. The event, Walter and Alpha Coles Blackburn Scholarship Foundation Fund raising event. The facility itself was great, however the Mall area had a shut down of all of the elevators and escalators. Security was notified and an alternate plan was offered to allow all to exist safely.
My sister had her wedding here and it was so beautiful! This place is amazing! It's located downtown, plenty of nearby parking, grand staircase and privacy was provided. It's a wonderful place and I can't recommend it enough!
Rundown disaster where bums hang out in the winter to get out of the cold. It's not a safe place to bring your wife or kids. Maintenance stopped sometime a decade ago. Street citizens nap on the benches here or sit around fondling themselves while warely eyeing intruders to the space they've claimed. Would it be to hard to just officially close the place to the public and make it a homeless shelter?
A very beautiful and quiet place to have some space, enjoy a lunch, see some art pieces or have nice views of downtown Indianopolis. Connected to hotels and the mall which is very convenient. They had some calm music playing adding to the ambience. Was not crowded, dirty, or anything to complain about.
"we've done a lot of stairs today" said Rocky. there was a bird flying around in there. i liked the snowflake decorations and the kids were into the escalators.
Nice gathering place and love the entertainment. They really need to fix the leaking roof though - has been a persistent problem for years.Visited onWeekday
As a wedding photographer, we love working at The Indianapolis Artsgarden! The space is modern, well lit, and absolutely stunning in the evenings! - Danielle Harris Photography
The Artsgarden is a really special venue in the city, and in the heart of it all. It's like photographing in a giant light box too! We've seen this venue decorated in so many different ways that matches the bride's vision. Every time it is a beautiful. We love how it is connected to The Conrad for guests and convenience. The options for catering are fantastic as well.
Beautiful spot. Shame I was there in the heart of the pandydemic cuz a large majority of the city as well as everything in it was euther shut down completely or operating with minimum staff and occupancy.
Good place to sit down while you get some shopping in, filled with cool art, there was a pianist playing. It's overall just a unique building.
