Power tools, high performance computers, and unsupervised undergraduates.
An engineering facility dedicated to undergraduate education. Emphasis is placed on engineering with a focus on hands-on learning and real world experience.
We hope to expose students to an innovative environment that encourages creativity and fosters outside the box thinking so upon graduation students will seek out or create similar environments.
The Deason Innovation Gym is a student-centered makerspace filled with both high tech and common tools and materials. Once oriented, students gain 24/7 access to the space. We welcome all SMU students, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, from across campus. With a little training, students can use the 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC carving machine, vinyl cutter and power tools to create objects and complete projects, both personal and for class. Learn more about how to get oriented and trained here.
At the Deason Innovation Gym, we are not afraid to experiment. No idea is too wild. We enable students of all disciplines to realize their ideas by giving them the tools and space to make beyond the bounds of the classroom. At the DIG, we learn by doing and grow through failure.
Through extra-curricular programming, from student-initiated projects, to skill clinics, short-term collaborative projects and immersive, multi-day design challenges, students engage in purpose-driven learning, practicing their technical skills and developing their ability to work together to solve complex problems.
Students are encouraged to pursue projects, big and small, that interest them. Our informal learning space is the perfect place for students to explore, push themselves and develop their ability to struggle through ambiguity, persevere in the face of challenges, and drive towards an end result.
