The International Shark Attack File is a world-renowned database and ongoing scientific research project. The File is administered through the auspices of the American Elasmobranch Society, an international organization of leading shark research scientists, and through the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida. Scientific researchers and physicians utilize the File, and access to the data is granted only after careful screening by a scientific panel on a case-by-case basis. Access by the press is strictly forbidden as all information is considered privileged and confidential. More than 5,700 individual investigations are currently housed in the File, covering a period from the mid-1500's to the present. Much of the data in the File originates from the voluntary submissions of numerous cooperating scientists who serve worldwide as regional observers, and from victims themselves.
The International Shark Attack File is a scientific compilation of all known shark attacks world-wide. Its purpose is to record and synthesize information surrounding shark attacks in order to gain insight into this phenomenon. We rely on a broad network of experts and observers.
