The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) provides accreditation programs for vascular testing, echocardiography, nuclear/PET, MRI, diagnostic CT, dental CT, carotid stenting, vein treatment and management, cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular catheterization. The IAC programs for accreditation are dedicated to ensuring quality patient care and promoting health care and all support one common mission: Improving health care through accreditation®.
History of the IAC
The IAC incorporated all of its divisions into one IAC organization in 2008, but its history began more than 25 years ago with the inception of the first of the IAC accreditation divisions — the IAC Vascular Testing — formerly the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) in 1991. From this first accrediting body, the IAC has continued its path of developing standards and methods for the evaluation of the quality of care delivered. Holding true to its original mission, the IAC’s scope has expanded to provide similar peer review processes for multiple imaging modalities within the medical community. A division was created in 1996 for the accreditation of echocardiography, in 1997 for the accreditation of nuclear cardiology, general nuclear medicine and PET, in 2000 for the accreditation of MRI, and in 2006 for the accreditation of CT. In 2010, the IAC expanded its scope of accreditation from imaging to include therapeutic, procedure-based accreditation programs and developed through the development of a division for the accreditation of carotid stenting. In 2013, IAC Vein Center was created to evaluate the quality of those providing of vein treatment and management, followed by the release of IAC Cardiac Electrophysiology in 2016. The newest of the IAC accreditation programs, IAC Cardiovascular Catheterization, launched in fall 2017. The IAC has grown strong and successful through the multi-specialty, intersocietal collaboration of the vast array of physicians, technologists, sonographers, physicists and numerous other medical professionals representing more than 40 medical specialties, as sponsoring organizations, who contribute to its efforts.
Responding to an increased focus on quality by participating clinicians, referring physicians, administrators, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid services, third party insurers and patients, the IAC has grown its staff, board of directors and network of application reviewers and site visitors incrementally over the past decade. Today, the IAC works in concert with more than 14,000 sites throughout the U.S. and Canada to provide a pathway for documenting quality patient care.
Accreditation of Facilities Beyond U.S. and Canada
Effective Fall 2015, the IAC is beginning to offer accreditation to facilities providing and interpreting medical imaging and specific therapeutic procedures, beyond the U.S. and Canada. Accreditation decisions rendered to international applicant facilities will be made in accordance with the applicable division standards and the existing IAC Accreditation Program Policies & Procedures, inclusive of the review of submitted applications, representative case studies and, when applicable, recommendations by site visitors. The application and all corresponding documents required for accreditation will be solely issued and accepted in English.
