I love visiting here to see my grandfather! The facility is huge and grandpa says there are a lot of activity options and ways to stay busy. I love that I’m able to bring my dog to visit him as well because he loves dogs! The staff are super friendly and helpful! The only thing he dislikes is that he isn’t allowed to smoke when he wants to…now I’m a no smoker but to tell someone who has smoked for their whole life that they cant is so tough when they are grown adults who grew up in a different time.
Great facility, great care for my dad, who has alzheimer's. The staff actually cares, unlike most nursing homes in the area. I live in Waterloo and I'm more than happy to drive further to see him in a facility where I feel like he's being properly cared for.
As a current, soon to be former, employee I do not recommend. The things I have seen, heard and how staff treats other staff and residents is appalling. Nursing staff will bully you for no reason and then nursing staff in the locked units yell at residents and belittle them. I turned in two nurses for this behavior and I was then disciplined for being “rude.” I have been told by people who have worked here for years to “watch my back” and that alone is DISGUSTING. Not one person gets in trouble, they keep staff that is horrible and if you open your mouth about anything you get in trouble. Residents deserve better and they don’t pay enough to get bullied.
I wouldn't give 1 star if I could give zero I would. I worked there since February 11 of 23 my first night in training I heard the nurses and staff talk horrible about the resident. They never cleaned the residents properly when I asked about it I was verbally attacked by multiple nurses. I made my supervisor aware he told me the ladies here are particular just keep my head down and I'll b ok. Me being a outspoken person I still asked my questions and raised my concerns. My trainer Theresa dack 2 and her friend Angela from Dack 2 night shift always had racial slurs to say even telling me I'm surprised to see somebody like myself working there. After making the supervisor aware a second time they moved me then moved me back that's when I knew I was being targeted. I had questions about cares no one would respond just so I can get wrote up. I thought about leaving but I didn't I knew my job so I came and did so. The other night a resident was aggressive with a CNA so I tried stepping in to redirect his attention she looked afraid so in a culm manner I told him it was a mistake she's sorry the nurse came out and walked him back to his room. 10 minutes later she comes out and tell me I have to go home because he complained I was intimidating him. Next day they called and said I was fired because I wasnt fit for the job. I'm wondering is that because of what Angela dack 2 and Theresa dack 2 night shift told me. A resident on my second day working asked if I couldnt be allowed in his room or help with his cares. Angela dack 2 and Theresa dack 2 stated that he's never been around my type before after being asked what's my type they quote a big black man I never seen before I would b a little scared to. That rubbed me wrong but still I did my job and continued to work. After being fired they say I have been written up twice which I was never informed and they wouldn't tell me why. I was wrongfully terminated due to racial bias they just didn't understand me I never yelled or tried to intimidate anyone I'm starting a class action for anyone want to get a board. Iowa vets home is horrible lack of staff due to the older staff that been there and push everyone else that questions the wrong doing out.
Was so impressed with how clean and nice this was. Reminds me of a college campus. The staff was very nice. So glad our Vets are being taken care of.
Only giving a 1 star because I had to. I would NOT recommend anyone to take their family members to The Iowa Veterans Home. Staffing there is corrupt and so is upper management. It seems like “seniority” means more, then the concerns of residents!! There is a lot of verbal abuse from staff members and you can speculate with just a short time being there. Supervisors don’t act like supervisors, they tag along and agree with the staff they are close with. They don’t report claims that need to be reported. Just because someone has worked there for several years does not mean their actions or attitude is justified with their position at IVH. This place is disgusting for how they treat their workers!!!!!! It’s supposed to be about the residents and to treat those how you would want to be treated.
Very easy toal access, but a bit difficult to find help. Clean environment, and great views.
I’d give zero if I could. I applied to an open food service position over two months ago. I have 4ish years of food service experience. I Got an interview and was told it would be a couple weeks. I waited two weeks and called to follow up. I was unable to reach them. I left a voicemail and left my contact information. No call back. It’s been TWO MONTHS. So why are they just now sending me the “we regret to inform you” email? Booboo I’ve been done. I’ve known. I’ve already moved on. Yet they want to encourage me to keep applying at open positions? My suggestion is they get better communication skills and not send the email months later. Obviously nobody is going to wait that long
Zero out of five stars- but it makes me put at least one. I was terminated from my position as Activities Assistant the same week I reported abuse I thought was happening. Bullying from upper management and other staff who are "in good" with upper management. If upper management doesn't like you, you'll be fired. Special note: I've never been fired from a job - in fact, I have a great resume. It's a terrible place for residents and for staff. Just one example I reported as a concern: The med aid jams the food into the resident's mouth when the resident is shaking his head no and one other example: The same med aid came into a resident's room and told him she had his shot of whiskey and his candy aka his pills and a cup of water. Little does she know, this resident's father was an alcoholic....the staff don't take the time to actually get to know the residents and do not consider their pasts like they should, especially since they are VETERANS. NOTE: I was a mandatory reporter, therefore, I reported the issues I was seeing, however, my concerns were ignored and I was fired.
Very nice and clean, rooms are big, easy to get around.
