Really good hospital to bring your pet. If your having any type of emergency this is the place to go. The wait time is long you’ll be here awhile for sure at least two hours at minimum. We bring all our pets here and they are very helpful. They give you the pricing information upfront before they do anything. They do accept care credit and you can apply for it on the spot too. The prices are high, just to be seen, walk in the door it’s $225.00 as of 2023. Then the tests, bloodwork, etc… Nothing to do while waiting unless you play on your phone. A big plus is they do offer military discount!
4/8/23 for a scheduled euthanasia for my cat Mika bc he was suffering from late-stage squamous cell carcinoma. I called ahead that day to schedule an appt. When I arrived w/my family &checked in at the front desk, the vet quickly picked up Mika in his carrier &we followed. She turned into a large room &we followed bc NO instruction was given to us. 2nd employee sharply told us to stop. There was no sign on the wall by the door to say we couldn't enterthe sign is on the door that retracts out of view when the door is open. I asked what they were doing with him &they said he's getting sedated. A 3rd employee took us to a waiting room &told us to ring the bell when ready. We waited in the room for ~30min, so I rang the bell &a woman brought us paperwork to fill out. After paying she left the room. We waited an hr w/o anyone checking on us. I went to use the bathroom &saw the vet who took Mika in the exam room, 2 women working at the reception desk when we walked in, &the woman who did our intake paperwork were standing around chatting at a desk. After returning from the bathroom, we waited +30min, then I got up &found the same woman who brought the paperwork and asked what was going on bc it had been a while. She looked over at her computer screen to a MS Teams chat &said she would check on it for us. We then waited at least 15-25min for a 4th person to come in to tell us he scratched someone so they were going to give him anti-anxiety meds. She also explained that bc of this, he wouldn't be released to us until rabies testing was done. While we were upset we couldn't bury Mika that night, we understood it's state law protocol. 10-15 minutes later, the woman who checked us in at the reception desk came into the waiting room & told us that an animal that needed CPR. This was ~2hr after we had arrived for a scheduled appt. There was hardly anyone in the waiting room, and no one said to us it was a busy night. During the entire time this was going on we couldn't see Mika & had only been given vague updates. At 10:45pm, a vet brought him in to the room wrapped in a blanket with his IV port on one leg. He was awake and alert and didn't act like he was on meds or sedation. She told us to ring when we were ready &left. After, Mika jumped out the blanket &was looking for ways to escape the room. We gave him tearful goodbyes, wrapped him back up in the blanket, my sister held him on her lap wrapped in the blanket &we rang the bell. He was very calm, not fighting to escape the blanket at all. The vet came back in with water to test the line, anesthesia, &euthanasia. When she went to test the IV, she said it was blocked, so she gave all 3 syringes directly into the port in his front right leg. We wondered why they held Mika in the exam room for so long in the first place if they didn't test the line. Anesthesia knocked him out instantly &the euthanasia followed. By the time he passed, it was 11pm. This was not my first euthanasia &it probably won't be my last, but it was definitely the most unpleasant. It was scheduled in advance, a confirmation email sent with a specific time of 8:30pm yet took THREE hrs from walking in the front door of the hospital to leaving. I understand it was Saturday night on a holiday weekend, but the staff working that night definitely didn't feel like they were giving their best, especially for a family saying goodbye to their loved one. Mika passed peacefully in the end, but he was distressed the entire time. And to the one blond curly-haired woman on staff who said "this is just how cats are" about him scratching, no, that's how cats act when they aren't handled properly. Mika never scratched a vet in the 7 years I've had him, &up until his passing my sister took him for monthly nail trimmings with no issues or needing meds. I didn't feel that he was treated with the level of care I expect for an animal who was VISIBLY &AUDIBLY suffering &needed to peacefully transition. Overall horrible experience. The one star is for the pawprints that we got after Mika's passing. It's the least they could do.
Came into this hospital with an injured dog, left with just his collar. Our Bruce, the center of our world and the light of our lives, his life was put in Dr Troxel's hands. And he failed him. He came out of surgery unable to breathe on his own. Then we were told ventilators were not an option due to "lack of staffing". Our dog's life couldn't make it due to lack of staffing? The efforts to contact local hospitals for backup was minimal. Our questions were not clearly answered and we'll never really know what killed him. It was all so vague. This surgeon was so confident in this surgery, then after the surgery so confident our boy would never breathe on his own again, or survive. He wasn't even given a chance or an explanation. Bruce was just a baby, only 4 years old. He had so much life left to life. Whoever is to blame, however this happened, the end result was we lost our dog when he should've been saved. We're left with a hole in our hearts that will never recover. The most incredible dog died at 4 years old and this hospital was unable to save him. While they go on with their lives, our life is left changed forever. Nothing anyone can say will undo this.
We brought our cat Tobi to this vet late at night when our local emergency vet did not have the means to provide tertiary care. Immediately, we felt like we could trust them. We felt thankful that they listened to our story so they could provide the best care they could for Tobi. They gave us multiple updates throughout the following day about our boy’s condition and everything they were doing to try and help him. Unfortunately, Tobi had died that day, but we felt like they did everything to give him a fighting chance. They were very accommodating for us to spend time with him and were very compassionate as we grieved. Everyone, from the front desk staff, vet techs, and vets were all so caring. We will definitely be using them in the future for any emergency or complex animal needs.
After giving this place a THIRD chance to solve a seperate incident for my dog, they have failed once again to give her not only a proper diagnosis but any useful care. My dog has been lethargic and stressed from bodily pain. Due to many of the North Shore clinics not accepting emergency appointments I reluctantly came back here despite last time they suspected her for NCPE just for her to be fine the next day. She is traumatized from the visit to the point I couldn't go near her because, the way they must have handled her when I left scared her when they needed to "check" for any form of pain. I left her for a few hours so they could sedate her & try again, just to send me away with no answers, lots of costly medication and an enormous bill. My dog is not aggressive by any means. Most the dogs that come into this place are medium/large dogs...but they can't do anything cause she's being "too uncooperative"? I took her to her usual place out of state and they found out through X-Rays that she has fluid in her leg and may need surgery. This cost half the price and we got our answer. Thanks for brushing her off, wasting money, time and in addition, not listening to my concerns. This place is too expensive for what they're worth. All the desk staff and assistant vets are the only good part about this place. Please avoid this hospital if you are looking for competent veterinarians who care more about making money than helping your pet get better.
We lost our Scout today. I am so appreciative of the kind, compassionate, professional care Scout received. We were seen immediately and Dr Silvia Bernal was who we needed. She reviewed our options and we felt supported the entire time. We are so grateful for her expertise & the time she spent with us during a very sad, heartbreaking loss. All of the staff were attentive & I couldn’t recommend more.
Fuji came to Mass Vet for a gastropexy. I was completely terrified of having him go under anesthesia and into surgery. The entire staff at Mass Vet - from those at reception, to the anesthesia nurse who received Fuji, to Dr. Cortez and Dr. Frem - was incredibly kind, empathetic, and giving of their time. I had so many questions and left so many tears in the lobby, but the team did all they could to provide me with as much information as I asked for and reassured me everything would be OK. Thankfully, the entire surgery went really smoothly, and just a few days later Fuji was already acting like his normal self. I am incredibly grateful to the entire team at Mass Vet for their knowledge, experience, kindness, and care when looking after Fuji.
I brought in my dog because she was making a weird hacking sound. I could not get an appointment with my own vet and didn't want to wait . They listened to her lungs and heart and took her temperature. Long story short it was just a revere sneeze which sounds more scary than what it is. They did not charge me a dime which is amazing even though I don't care about money when it comes to my dog she is family to my wife and I. I wish I remember the nurse's name he was awesome and caring and clearly loves and cares about animals.
Doctors and staff seemed very nice and professional. I believe they did the best they could for my dog. Really appreciated their kindness. I did however want there to be more clarity and communication with how much I was going to be charged. Beforehand I was given the estimate and paid for the surgery but at some point the costs went over the max on the estimate and I wasn't informed of this until I came back in and they said I still owed a few hundred dollars from the last visit. It's an expensive place, most veterinary visits are and emergency situations add costs, I understand that but because of how costly it is I think they need to be even more up front about it when they're over what they originally told you. At least to tell you that it happened and why
Outstanding care and professionalism. Not only did I take my special needs dog there for an internal medicine specialist, Dr Palladino, who was superb, I had to take a friends dog there for an emergency surgery while they were out of the country. The team was incredible and saved her life. The communication was constant and clear. Follow up was great and the staff was caring and considerate.
