J. P. Small Memorial Stadium

Description

J. P. Small Memorial Stadium is a baseball park in Jacksonville, Florida. It is located in the Durkeeville community in northwest Jacksonville. Constructed in 1912 and rebuilt in 1936, it was the city's first municipal recreation field, and served as its primary baseball park before the construction of Wolfson Park in 1954. Throughout the years the stadium has been known at various times as Barrs Field, Durkee Field, and the Myrtle Avenue Ball Park.HistoryBarrs Field eraThe original facility was constructed in 1911–1912 on a patch of land owned by Joseph H. Durkee, a former Union officer during the American Civil War who had settled in Jacksonville, where he became a prominent businessman and politician. In 1911, Durkee's son Jay Durkee turned control of the property over to Amander Barrs, a local businessman and President of the Jacksonville Baseball Association. Barrs ordered the construction of a recreational field to be used by local teams on the property. The facility was completed in 1912 and was known as Barrs Field, but was generally known as the Myrtle Avenue Ball Park to locals. One early tenant was the Jacksonville Athletics, an African-American club for which James Weldon Johnson played. One of the rare professional clubs was the Jacksonville Scouts of the Florida State League, who played in 1921. However, as the city had no municipal park, other teams used fields at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds or across the river in South Jacksonville during this time.

Home of Stanton College Preparatory Baseball + Edward Waters College Ball, a historic time capsule of days gone by Hank Aaron and Co, a blast from the past under the lights. Feels like timeless/ageless American Past-time.
I always enjoy going to games that my son and his team play at this park. There's plenty of seating which is all covered which is nice to block the rain or sun. My only issue would be the parking. Definitely not enough parking to accommodate all of the players, coaches & fans that attend these games but other than that I'm very pleased with the park & condition of the field.
The great family park just dont take your kids everwere in the park and please watch your kids.
Great community baseball field and covered bleachers! Best place to sit or stand is the top row where you can experience a little air flow. Good community parking Did not experience the restrooms
Cool place for a high school baseball game. You can feel the history in this location. Facility is well maintained, field in decent shape. Parking is limited so arrive early.
Beautiful park, something for everyone. Extremely relaxing
Great ball park, makes you feel like you’re back in the 1930’s and 40’s
The park use to be great but they removed the benches no body can't bring personal chairs
idk bc me & my grandson Braylon never got to enjoy my nephew Tone's baseball game due to how everyone had to purchase their tickets vis an online site which I couldn't get to work on my phone. I had cash ready to pay with but NO that option wasn't made available to us!
Needs field upgrades. Used by Stanton HS and Ed Waters University. Historic site in Jacksonville. For a NCAA DIV 2 baseball team, this place should be turfed out.
