Jacob Riis Park

Description

Jacob Riis Park, also called Jacob A. Riis Park or Jacob Riis State Park, is a seaside park at the southwestern end the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens. It lies at the foot of the Marine Parkway–Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, adjacent to the east of Fort Tilden, and west of Neponsit and Rockaway Beach. Originally a city-run park under the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, it is currently part of the Jamaica Bay Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area, and is managed by the National Park Service (NPS).Plans emerged for a coastal park located in the Rockaways in the early 20th Century, with the property acquired by the city in 1912. Initially called Seaside Park and later Telawana Park, the park was named in 1914 for social journalist Jacob Riis, who advocated for the creation of the park. During World War I, the site was used as the Rockaway Naval Air Station, one of the first naval air stations in the United States. Riis Park was largely constructed between 1936 and 1937 by NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, who envisioned Riis Park as a getaway for New York City residents comparable to Jones Beach State Park on Long Island. The park was built along with the Marine Parkway Bridge and the Belt Parkway in nearby Brooklyn, which provided access to the park.

You should visit Jacob Riis Park for its unique combination of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and historical significance. The park's beaches are a great place to relax and enjoy the sun, and the surrounding landscape offers scenic views. It's an excellent spot for picnics, beach volleyball, and other outdoor activities. The historic bathhouse adds a touch of nostalgia, and the park's connection to Jacob Riis' important work in social reform makes it even more meaningful. The beauty of the park, the relaxing beach atmosphere, and the chance to connect with history all make for a memorable and enjoyable visit. Playground: Kids playing and swing. Restrooms: Separate men & women Bathrooms. Picnic area: Group or family picnic area.
Riis Beach is a true hidden gem in New York City for the sense of liberation and acceptance one feels here. It is beautiful to see all types of people living their best lives so happy and free. I was in the LGBTQIA+ section at the end of the beach and I would comeback here for the community, view, ambiance, and strong waves. Many women are topless and men are scantily dressed. The music is happy pop and I bopped from Britney Spears to Whitney Houston. The water is a bit murky, but the strong waves make it very entertaining. I recommend swimming in front of the lifeguard if you are not a strong swimmer and not going in too deep for obvious safety reasons. There is a food cart and it seemed reasonably priced at $6. I wish I had something to eat before partaking in all the festivities!
My 3rd favorite beach in NYC, it’s such a family vibe that makes you feel like you are elsewhere. It’s like a Long Island beach meets Manhattan beach vibe. The sunsets here are incredible and there is a lot of activity available, basketball courts, golf course, bike paths, etc! Lifeguards on duty at this beach Playground: Playgrounds for kids through the park. Basketball courts, handball courts, golf course must pay, volleyball posts to attach nets Restrooms: Yes but you may have to walk far depending on where you are Dog-friendliness: Yes dogs are allowed, supervised Picnic area: Many picnic is areas with benches and grills
Nice clean beach. But the water is freezing cold. They do have lots of bathrooms, but there’s no convenient store. They only have 5 spots to eat inside a little food court. Be ready to pay $18 per person for food there. But apart from that’s it’s nice.
Peaceful good for the kids and parents you could barbecue of course you have to bring your own you can fish for those that love fishing go in the water rest be at peace. Enjoy
Parking is $20 free after 5pm you can purchase food and drinks, but i think it's best to travel with your own. You'll probably enjoy it more.
Riis is cool for a quick getaway. I went there on Thursday. It wasn't too crowded. The life guards were present. There were a lot of shells that made walking towards the water a bit uncomfortable. Also, the bathroom didn't have much soap, and you need to keep in mind the bathroom times because it doesn't stay open late. Overall, it's cool for a quick beach day. Restrooms: Make sure you bring soap for the bathroom.
Love it! It was absolutely worth the drive. It took us one hour and 45 minutes from Philadelphia. There was lots of parking, the bathroom was clean, and the beach was clean. We went to section G, and there is only one food truck available. If you are going there, make sure you have food and drinks because you won't be able to get anything there.
Overall good place and safe for kids. We need more public toilets. VISITORS- there is a lot trash bin - please make yourself comfortable.
The beach is beautiful. Parking is right across the street at the lots and there are tons of restrooms. Make sure to bring snacks as there are not many food options.
