We love the JP Branch! It's beautifully designed, the staff are really friendly and helpful, and the kids' book selection is great the adults' book selection is on the smaller side, though. We love their events too story time, Lego play, book sales, etc. We use their free/discounted museum passes all the time. I occasionally work in the library or on their terrace - it's really nice, too.
Friendly staff, nice facilities. Open again on Saturdays. Did you know you can get free or reduced fee museum passes at BPL? Look at the art in the downstairs hallway to the community room. And the benches on the lawn outside.
My review pertains to only the children's section as that's why i visited: There is hard tiled flooring throughout the newly renovated kid and otherwise beautiful section. Honestly, what were they thinking? Did they not know carpet dampens sound? Or that small children tend to trip and fall? There is also a gigantic booth-thing in the kids section which takes up most of the space and makes seeing around and looking after the children nearly impossible. They do the children's story-time in the basement NOT in the kids area, likely due to the badly used design which is really a pain when you there are so many strollers. There, the kids are expected to sit on the unswept tiled floor and there are uncomfortable seats for the caretakers. The woman doing the story time does an excellent job but really the space is so horribly unsuited to kids and their caretakers I won’t go back. It seems a beautiful library but clearly impractical to children, I think the designers must have never been around children. What a waste!!
I like the shops along Centre Street, historic homes and Jamaica Pond nearby. JP as it is affectionately called by Bostonians was once home to as many as a dozen beer breweries. Today the Boston Beer Company still makes its famous Sam Adams brand and free tours and tastings are offered if you visit.
Lovely library. Recently renovated to meet modern needs. Plenty of space to work. Very nice kids room on the far end of the library to help keep things quiet for everyone else. Conference room and event room big enough to keep likely 50+ in the basement for community functions. They just added a makerspace a 3D printer and some desktop workstations and I wouldn't be surprised if they'd accept help or donations to expand it. Fiore's bakery is across the street if you ever need a snack. Overall a great community space and public resource.
Good place to go do some work. Open 9-5 on Saturday like the central library
I went to the Tropical Fiesta, sponsored and staffed by the Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch Library. The steel drum ensemble was highly entertaining and the Dominican food tasty and plentiful. The Friends were such gracious hosts. And it was all free as almost all library events tend to be. Hooray for library activity programming!
Nice place overall. The renovation left the building in very good shape, and it's very pleasing to be inside. The only downsides; the place is rather small, the selection a bit limited, and tends to stick to 9-5 type hours except for a few days.
Very grateful for this library and it’s staff especially now during covid times. Oh how I miss the story times, browsing books and just hanging out at the library with my kids. A great place with great programs for everyone. Thank you!
Brand new renovation just opened today. Providing an increase in library space, and a huge improvement in the modernity and usefulness of the library. Now it is a great place to hang out or just stop by.
