Richmond Science Center is part of the
Charles County Public Schools system. Charles
County Public Schools provides 26,500
students in grades prekindergarten through 12
with an academically challenging education.
Located in southern Maryland, 30 miles from
our nation's capital, Charles County Public
Schools has 36 schools that offer a
technologically advanced, progressive and
high-quality education that builds character,
equips for leadership and prepares students
for life, careers, and higher education. The
science center is named for retired
superintendent James E, Richmond. The
Superintendent spent his entire career with
Charles County Public Schools, starting in
1966 as a classroom teacher. One of Mr.
Richmond's visions was to bring the "WOW"
factor to education. He has been recognized
nationally, locally and by the state of
Maryland for Charles County Public Schools
efforts to eliminate the minority achievement
gap and his effort to develop science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) programs for all students. In 2011, The
Space Foundation, in partnership with the
Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF) and
NASA, presented Richmond with the Alan
Shepard Technology in Education Award for
his outstanding contributions to Charles
County Public Schools educational technology.
