Every September, John Brown University devotes three days to celebrating writing and the arts through readings, workshops, and informal gatherings.
On September 20-22, 2017, John Brown University will celebrate writing and the arts through readings, workshops, and informal gatherings during the university’s annual Giving Voice: A Festival of Writing and the Arts. We have invited creative nonfiction writer Lisa Ohlen Harris, graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang, and spoken word artist David Bowden as this year's artists.
JBU wants to give high school students in the region an opportunity to see, hear, and participate in one of our greatest gifts—creativity—to become involved in writing and the arts, by understanding better how these art forms work and by actively participating in artistic production. On Friday, September 22nd, over twenty workshops will be offered specifically for high school students—creative nonfiction, poetry, fiction, songwriting, playwriting, readers theater, improvisation, film, calligraphy, screen printing, and others. The day will begin at 9:30 and end at 2:00, allowing most students to come and go from their schools on a normal schedule. Students will participate in two different workshops. It promises to be another exciting day of giving voice to the artist in each of us.
We will again offer creative writing workshops for teachers that will give professional development credit through the state of Arkansas.
So save the dates—September 20-22—and plan on joining us for what promises to be a great festival of writing and the arts in 2017. You can check out the registration form, schedule, the guest writers, the workshops, and some of the pictures of last year’s festival, and then begin making plans to attend. Registration is open from June 1 through September 12. We hope to see you there.
