Award-winning Jenny's Jars is committed to eco-sustainability while providing uniquely flavored items that are healthier for our bodies and world.
How does {Jenny’s Jars} keep business eco-friendly and sustainable?
1) We do not buy produce from big box stores.
There is no way of knowing how far produce traveled to these locations. We want to have a small carbon footprint, so we don’t use produce that has traveled from a far-away land.
2) Most of our produce is in season and comes from local farmers, garden co-ops, friends’ backyards, or our own garden. There are only a few exceptions to this rule. For example, our bourbon vanilla beans comes from a women's free-trade, self-sufficiency, micro enterprise project in Madagascar. We assure you that anything that isn't local, still supports "local" grassroots efforts in one way or another.
3) We only use produce that is in season and at peak ripeness. This means fewer natural resources are used in the growing process. We swap Jenny’s Jars items/garden bounty for produce in many instances. We use cash when necessary. Barter or monetary payment doesn’t matter to us (though we like to keep things old-school with bartering because its fun)—we just care that the very start of our ingredients are grown with love…it makes everything taste better!
4) Almost all produce in Jenny’s Jars is organic.
We don’t mark our menu items as “organic” unless 100% of the ingredients are organic—even the sugar and pectin. But, you can eat Jenny’s Jars items knowing that most likely the produce in your jar is organic. If you want to know for sure, just ask!
5) For every jar returned, customers receive a $.50 discount per jar off their next order. We reuse these jars for up-cycling projects and to start seedlings for urban gardens, which are given away for free to families and communities in need of food acquisition. Our next urban garden project will take place in San Diego, where our seedling jars will be donated to refugee families to start their own food source gardens in small living spaces. Know a family that is struggling with nutrition or access to fresh produce? Refer them!
6) (Almost) Everything we make and sell on our menus is vegan.
However, just to be transparent… we will make non-vegan items for special orders and if there are jars left over, they may appear on our menu. In such rare instances we use free-range, organic, hormone-free animal products, most often coming from small homesteads. And, for all you veggies and vegans…don’t worry, we use separate pans, utensils and cutting boards for everything! Animal products will never touch the ingredients in our vegan items.
7) We compost 100% of all natural waste from Jenny’s Jars.
Almost all non-natural waste, such as the returned sealing lids are up-cycled and reused. About 2% of Jenny’s Jars waste is recycled. Nothing from Jenny’s Jars goes into the trash!
8) We do not package anything in non-renewable packaging, nor do we buy products that are packaged in that way.
