Description

Before the Georgia Viaduct was expanded in 1972, the neighborhood of Hogan's Alley housed Vancouver's African-American population. At the heart of this community was Vie’s Chicken and Steak House, where locals and visitors alike would stop to get a warm bite of soul food. The shrine used to be part of Vie’s, where Jimi's grandmother, Nora Hendrix, worked as a cook for many years and lived nearby. Jimi spent much of his childhood in Vancouver, as his parents often dumped him under the care of relatives. In addition to numerous summer vacations, Jimi even attended school in Vancouver for a brief time. Vie's hosted a number of visiting black performers such as Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong. These artists would eat at Vie's after concerts, once the restaurant had closed to the general public. It is believed that Jimi and his cousins would stay up late helping their grandmother serve these famous musicians. After being discharged from the Army, Jimi returned to Vancouver during the winter of 1962- 1963 to practice his music, he even played shows on Granville Street. Neighbors say that Jimi lived in this building and would practice his guitar after hours. If you listen on a quiet night, you can still hear him playing.

Jimi Hendrix's roots can be traced to the neighborhood Hogan's Alley. His grandparents, Nora and Ross Hendrix immigrated to Vancouver in 1911. There they raised Jimi's father, James Allen Hendrix, who moved to Seattle in 1941 where he met Lucille Jeter, Jimi's mother.

It's really great to have the shrine here. I hope for more something soon to commemorate Juneteenth here. IDK if that's celebrated here in Vancouver or not. A historical plaque and photos would be great or even a QR code to direct one to info regarding the Black history here which includes Jimi Hendrix and his family. Thxz for keeping the shrine going!!
They closed it. This city is losing everything thatade it worth living here ........
Walked around Vancouver to find it said closed until Spring but as it was the end of April I was confused as to when Canadian Spring started lol. So I can't comment on the content but peering through a window there appeared to be plenty of stuff to view. Pity it was closed.
It ist not worth seeing
The Jimi Hendrix Shrine, one of Vancouver’s most fascinating urban curiosities, is closed due to lack of funds. While we are rather disappointed and ask why a person like Jimi Hendrix, who probably still receives / heirs royalties, would have a shrine that is unattended, we gave it a five star because at least his memory and that of his mother is still there for his many fans. Why does the American musician have a Vancouver place of worship? Jimi’s grandmother Nora Hendrix lived in Vancouver’s often overlooked African-American community around Hogan’s Alley in Strathcona. During his boyhood, Jimi spent many summers in Hogan’s Alley with Nora, who owned the former Vie’s Chicken and Steakhouse where the shrine is located. Vie’s was much more than a watering hole; it was the venue for visiting African American performers such as Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong. The artists would eat at Vie’s after concerts. Legend has it that Jimi and his cousins would stay up late helping their grandmother serve these famous musicians Born Johnny Allen Hendrix on 11-27-1942, Jimi Hendrix died 09-18-1970 at the age of 27. An American rock guitarist, singer and songwriter, a career that spanned only 4 years, Hendrix is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th Century. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes him as ‘arguably the greatest instrumental in the history of rock music. Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15, enlisted in the US Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. The world’s highest-paid performer, Hendrix headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before his accidental death from barbiturate related asphyxia on 09-18-1970. We honor his memory!
